The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice, the team announced Monday, the same day a shocking video surfaced showing the NFL star punching his then-fiancee in February.
The news release from the NFL team was terse.
"The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this afternoon," it read.
Rice had been suspended by the league for the first two games of the season, a controversial move that led to widespread criticism and to the league re-evaluating the punishment for domestic violence cases.

I was taught that it was better to marry for love than for money. A loving spouse wouldn’t do what Rice did to her.
Throwing a punch is different than possibly throwing a game bet on.
It sounds enticingly axiomatic but the Ravens just disproved it by releasing Rice.
The NFL is full of bad actors; I have no sympathy for either side. However, if business is the watchword then in the Manhattanite bubble of the league office they are, at present, more concerned about cable talking heads on ESPN and elsewhere, especially now that non-sports media will be hurling the usual PC invective. It sounds mad but they will be more concerned with threats of boycotts by groups who don’t even watch the NFL than they will by their current paying customers.
For now, Rice is more of a symbol than a person and will be treated as such. It will come as absolutely no shock if his suspension is increased for PR purposes and it will come as no shock if and when he is signed by a team seeking a running back, with the usual cap-in-hand platitudes mouthed by front office types.

Just as I am
1
Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!
2
Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
3
Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt;
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
4
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind;
Yes, all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
5
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
6
Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Employees that bring large quantities of bad press are not your best.
Remember Bob Costas and his idiotic remarks decrying America’s “gun culture”?
What he should have paid attention to is the NFL’s (and his own network’s) promotion of “thug culture”.
The NFL probably wished that video was not released, but once it was, they had no choice.
Now they need to do the same to that killer, Josh Brent.
Well it appears once she got out of the hospital she married the guy so if she’s happy I’m happy. There is no cure for stupid.
She isn’t going to be married to him much longer, now that the money train has come to a grinding halt.
Probably true.
The NFL doesn’t care that he did it. They only care that it became public.
Just go back to the hood and join the rest of he thugs.
Earlier today, ESPN was still trying to cast doubt on the video, saying “we cannot guarantee this video has not been altered”...still pimping for the NFL and Rice
The fact that they married after that episode leaves me wondering which one is the bigger fool.
Women are serving on the front lines now. They are Marines. They are in submarine crews. There is a UFC champion who’s female.
More than this, marriage ain’t what it used to be. What if the partners here are both male? What if Michael Sam gets caught in an elevator cold cocking his partner and dragging him out of the elevator by his foot? Is it still bad?
So, we’re supposed to get upset over all of this in one sense, and in another pretend its perfectly OK to make 100 lbs females into cops and firefighters?
I’m not saying what Rice did was right. It wasn’t. However, in the age of anything goes, so what? She could enlist in the Marines tomorrow morning and graduate 16 weeks later and join an infantry company.
Why? Well, the lure of all that $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, of course.
