President Barack Obama announced Sunday that he will be sending members of the U.S. military to West Africa to help in the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, which has claimed over 2,100 lives.
"We're going to have to get U.S. military assets just to set up, for example, isolation units and equipment there to provide security for public health workers surging from around the world," Obama said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
The president insisted that the situation in West Africa remains a serious national security concern. International medical organizations such as Doctors Without Borders have reportedly petitioned to the White House and explained the urgency of the outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also sounded the alarm last week and noted that the virus, which has mainly affected Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and has also spread to Nigeria, is "spiraling out of control."
CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said in an interview that a number of countries have "turned their backs" on those coming from the countries that have been hit hardest by the outbreak. He added that the restrictions on flights and border crossings that have been established are also hindering relief efforts.
"This is making it really hard to get help in and to respond effectively to the outbreak," Frieden told CNN.
"What we're seeing is a ... hugely fast increase in cases that's harder and harder to manage. The more we can get in there and tamp that down, the fewer cases we'll have in the weeks and months to come."
While Obama said that it is unlikely that the virus will spread to the U.S. in the short term, he warned that the disease could threaten the U.S. in the future.

I was thinking the same thing. He should send those teenaged, tattooed, ilegales instead. If they survive the tour of duty, learn English, and haven't misbehaved while saving the Africans, they can apply for citizenship. From their home south of the Rio Grande. When they turn 21.

I agree. I served four years with an honorable discharge, but if they threw this toward me, I would be AWOL, or, just refuse to obey orders,.
I’d rather be well in the stockade, than be dead from Ebola. It’s not a military mission.

If the U.S. has any role in West Africa, it should be with two hospital ships: one for medical staff and the other for patients. No U.S. troops or medical personnel should step on African soil.

The victims so far could all be “his son.” That’s what gets his attention. The Blacks and Whites in the U.S. military are, well, just military to him. The commander in chief has thrown out lots of the top best and brightest in the military. Here is an “opportunity” (read R. Emmanuel) to divert attention and news organizations for a long time away from his administration’s wrecking of institutions that do the most good for the most people. The infected soldiers and health care workers will overwhelm capacity - a pattern in line with his Marxist-inspired overwhelming all the other governmental programs.
Why troops? What the hell does he expect to accomplish with troops?
Obama has found another way to kill off the US military troops that he hates so much. Why doesn’t he send Mr Michelle Obama to tell the Ebola patients what to eat!
