Low-income residents in a California city will soon be able to get high for free.
The Berkeley City Council has passed a law requiring medical marijuana dispensaries to distribute 2 percent of their stashes to people making less than $32,000 per year or $46,000 per family.
Under the new ordinance, which was approved unanimously this summer, only city residents will be eligible and they must have a prescription.
'Basically, the city council wants to make sure that low-income, homeless, indigent folks have access to their medical marijuana, their medicine,” Councilman Darryl Moore told CBS San Francisco.
The law requires that the free medical marijuana, which is legal in California, 'be the same quality on average as medical cannabis that is dispensed to other members,' according to Berkeleyside.
Mayor Tom Bates says the move is an effort to provide equal access to what California law considers medication.

A sudden need to campaign in Berkeley?
It is poor leadership at the highest levels of government that has led to the decline of the nation.
The USA today is a larger version of NY City in the years before Rudy Giuliani was elected mayor and cleaned it up.
A series of weak democrat, liberal and RINO NY City mayors turned the city into a licentious cesspool in the 1970s, '80s and '90s.
Liberals were easy on street crime and law breakers at all levels - from misdemeanors to felonies.
Instead of enforcing the laws they were concerned with pandering to favored voting blocs and would just wring their hands over complaints that the city was out of control.
People reacted to the weakness and corruption of the mayors by losing respect for the city leaders and the law. People basically ignored any law they didn't like, from littering to graffiti, zoning, porn shops and clip joints.
When Rudy Giuliani took office in 1994 he immediately reinstated enforcement of all laws and prosecuted lawbreakers.
In only a few short years of his strong leadership he was able to clean the city up and effect a complete turnaround. He cleaned the streets up, he cleaned the graffiti off the subway cars and buildings, he let the police do their jobs, take the criminals off the street and he backed them up. He didn't side with the criminals and lawbreakers as our president often does.
That is the kind of leadership that is lacking in the entire nation today.

Hypocrites. If they were serious about helping low-income people they’d order all pharmacies in Berkeley to give away 2% of their prescriptions to poor people. Same with liquor stores, grocery stores, gas stations, auto dealerships, home builders, clothing stores and electronics stores: you MUST give away 2% of your goods to low-income people.
Still, I’m touched that they are so concerned that low-income people should get free pot. It’s a start at any rate towards requiring that ALL evil business owners give away their stuff.
I don’t have a lot of money; can I pick up one free six pack of beer a week? The Octoberfest beers are already on the shelf.
Only in the Bay Area would that be considered "low income".
