ROCKUMENTARY: SEPTEMBER 6, 1967
#1 Bobbie Gentry: Ode to Billie JoeJust what did the narrator and Billie Joe McAllister throw off the Tellahatchie Bridge? A ring? A doll? A baby? Why did Billie Joe jump off the bridge? No one knew. Screenwriter Herman Raucher, who wrote Summer of 42", took his own shot at solving the mystery in a movie of the same name.
What made this song successful is its ability to capture the atmosphere of a hot, dreary Mississippi summer day with nothing going on on the surface. But under the surface human passions throb.
Bobbie Gentry: Ode to Billie Joe
Thats it for tonight. Next week its 1968. Cue the Rockumentary theme!

I tend to like Neil’s stuff as long as he’s not performing it. It’s where my FRiend mylife and I part ways. Neil’s voice is “fingernails on a chalkboard” to me and his guitar playing is lame ... but so is Dylan, and between them, they are two of the greatest song writers of my lifetime. Right up there with Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits.

Neil Young’s voice always sounded like a cat being strangled to me. But that reedy high tenor worked well in harmony with others.
