All Philadelphia School District students are now eligible to receive free meals, officials said Thursday.
Students must simply show up to receive the free food - applications are no longer required.
"Our goal is to provide as many students as possible with access to healthy, nutritious meals," Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. said in a statement. "We want to keep students' focus on learning, not hunger."
A shift in federal policy means that school systems with at least 40 percent of students living in poverty can now apply to offer universal free meals.

Doesn’t do a bit of good. Does it
It also educates my grandchildren, so they can see the irrationality involved in the entitlement mindset.

An entire generation that will never know any way other than being fed at the government hog trough.

When they are ready to buy me a new car let me know, I think we are getting close
The parents are told the kids are getting their healthy food in school...it mostly isn't healthy and fresh cooked. Thus, the parents can use the food stamps to overfeed themselves and provide lots of junk food for the kids.
Brilliant planning. (sarcasm) You'd think that the parents should have to use some food stamps to buy the school meals.
Nice for the school boards to have so much money.
While they beg for funding from Corbett.
School administrators on the teet of government.
Their entire world is taxpayer funded. Salaries, transportation, food. Student to teacher to grave.
You need a crow-bar. And attitude.

That is always my question - Why are we paying MULTIPLE times to feed the same people?
Welfare and entitlement out of control!..... and all it does is keep more government school union workers in jobs.
how many Texas schools have done that? I haven’t heard of it yet.. middle school lunch here is $2.60
What happens to those who bring their own?
I was heartened to hear that at my son's school, two thirds of the kids refuse the "free" lunch and still brown bag.
TANSTAAFL!
I am all but certain that the entire Public School system of Cleveland has ‘free lunch’ and breakfast. Yes, all the kids that have this are also o food stamps.
Food stamps are very generous, depending on the local area a family of our can get around $700 month of food stamps.
And yet Corbett is about to take a drubbing becasue he supposedly cut big bucks from the education budget.......
They have been doing stuff like this for years. I remember a local PSA that invited one and all to drop by for free lunches the entire summer. No income check or requirements. This was in Conroe.
Things like this are just showing how the breeding class and the taxpayer class are increasingly becoming mutually exclusive. I’d like to think of taxpayers’ children lining up for this benefit for which their parents have paid, but I don’t think many of the children have taxpayer parents (at least in the Philly public school system).
Enrolled my two teen agers in high school recently. Interesting thing I learned about their school lunch program, Unlike middle school, there are several different lunch lines, one line is the basic lunch that costs $2.00 for the payers and free loaders alike, other lines for optional food items such as pizza, burgers etc. (the good stuff).
Kids who have the free lunch pass are not allowed to use their pass to buy items from those lines, even if they have cash to pay with. Kids who have a balance on their cards that parents have paid hard cash for, may purchase as much as they want from among the extra items.
I love it but am wondering how long it will be before some lib starts hollering discrimination.
We live in a very conservative area. In a high school population of about 2,000 there are probably fewer than a dozen minority kids. 25% of all the students get either a “free” lunch or reduced fee lunch.
I know people who could qualify for various benefits but they think it’s immoral to live off of others. There are still people like that. Imagine that.
Also, what the government does is not charity. Charity is voluntary. The government engages in legalized theft. When one person is forced to labor to support another, I would call that a form of slavery. That is what we have today.
So, you’re Irish? My husband is half Irish. Gives me a license to tell Irish jokes. ;-)
