A few days old but more timely than ever.
Speaking to a ballroom later, some of the loudest applause for Paul came when he quipped: “If the president has no strategy, maybe it’s time for a new president.”
In an emailed comment, however, Paul elaborated by saying: “If I were President, I would call a joint session of Congress. I would lay out the reasoning of why ISIS is a threat to our national security and seek congressional authorization to destroy ISIS militarily.”
John McCormack reminds us that Paul’s previous comment on ISIS was a lot more equivocal than that. (His op-ed last week on the folly of Obama’s interventionist ambitions in Syria offered no strategy on ISIS at all.) You can read the above as credulously or skeptically as you like. Maybe it’s proof that Rand really is more hawkish than his old man and that, after some initial ambivalence, he’s been convinced by the intelligence that crushing ISIS is the only way to defuse the threat. Or maybe he’s looked at the polls lately and noticed that the mainstream conservatives he’s hoping to woo in 2016 are swinging back towards interventionism. Maybe it’s a bit of both. There’s no reason to hold Rand to a different standard than his competitors. Show of hands: Who thinks Marco Rubio’s recent tough talk on comprehensive immigration reform is being driven purely by non-electoral considerations?
I’m curious about the libertarian reaction to all this, though.

Rand Paul is just another shallow libertarian, and for years has been moving left on many issues after pretending to be conservative.
LOL, actually it is a fundamental part of libertarianism.
hehe, if you say so.
In an emailed comment, however, Paul elaborated by saying: If I were President, I would call a joint session of Congress. I would lay out the reasoning of why ISIS is a threat to our national security and seek congressional authorization to destroy ISIS militarily.
A good start. However, I would first secure the borders, bulldoze down the mosques in the US, deport all muslims that will not convert, let them join ISIS, and then destroy them.
After that take care of the rest of the barbarians.
Opps, forgot. deport barry hussain sotero also. He can fight along side ISIS with his putter.
Well he, he, since it is one of their base fundamentals, yeah.
Rand Paul: “Let’s ignore everything I ever said on foreign policy!”
We could argue about it but it is off topic and that would be disrespectful to the thread creator.
Rand Paul is a Republican not a Libertarian.
Maybe you are confusing him with his father?
Rand Paul is a libertarian republican, like his father.
Like his father, Rand has also officially been part of his movement’s official libertarian party.
Libertarians often like to operate from the GOP for two reasons, if they think they can use it to actually gain office, and also because they are fighting to move it left and make it more libertarian.
and make it more libertarian.
More power to ‘em.
I am libertarian who is on the conservative side and I say that self defense is a perfect reason to put a strategy together to eliminate this scourge. US has some responsibility, so does the EU China and Russia as well as the other countries in the area.
My guess is you are the one that is not really a conservative, one of those that hijacked what it means o be conservative.
I don’t believe him. He sounds like an amen corner for Cruz, who has been dominating headlines for a week.
I’m reminded of what Ann Coulter said in the immediate aftermath of 9/11: “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.”
You sure aren’t a good guesser.
Rand Paul is liberal on a whole slew of issues, from abortion to gay marriage, and immigration.
In theory, national defense is a legitimate action of a limited government.
In practice, if it doesn’t have anything to do with legalizing drugs, libertarians aren’t really all that much interested in it.
Sure, if you are a pro-gay, pro-abortion, pro-immigration, etc, liberal, or rino.
If you support the libertarians moving the GOP left on social issues and national defense, then you probably don’t belong on a conservative site.
Modern warfare and capabilities, calls for a military and foreign policy, far different from the small, local military that the libertarians want.
By the way, remember that they want to fire the Border patrol and INS, and truly open the borders **Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders.**
She was correct.
Islam and civilization are not compatible.
One or the other will have to be eliminated.
Despite Barry’s lies, Islam has contributed nothing to civilization. They were not capable of building the planes that crashed into the twin towers.
They are barbarians. Islam is not a religion, but a political scheme for world domination invented by a paedophile. The Koran is the writings of a lunatic.
I heard Paul on radio today.
He was saying Syria and Iraq have to take on ISIS. He said the US could help with air strikes.
He then went off on tangent about George Washington and the US inheriting a parliamentary system or some such.
Such is the trouble with him. He can’t even focus on something real without drifting in to the world of theory and political philosophy.
