Russia could invade, and occupy, but they would know that they would be picked off in appalling numbers as time went on. It’s a strategy that has worked well for the Swiss, and also causes America’s foes to fear the price of invasion.

Exactly.
Russian can take all it wants. But even now I don’t think they can hold it. Weak troop morale and no money to support the victory.

Indeed, Yamamoto, educated at Harvard, would not even let the Japanese General Staff discuss it declaring to them his historic and iconic phrase that “invading America is foolish to contemplate because there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass”.
