I do believe her daughter was hoping for prayers for a return to health—not prayers for a religious conversion.

I don’t think her daughter or anyone here is asking anyone to pray through other than their own religion.

That’s an excellent point, Hildy. I sure wouldn’t want anyone praying in allah’s name over me or anyone else.

Interesting discussion. I wonder what is the most loving thing to do.

I dare say that God is doing what He needs to do regarding Joan Rivers. A lot can happen in a coma, and that’s up to God. We can all pray for her, and let God be God.

Bless you.

You do realize that from a Jewish perspective Stars and Stripes forever is praying for Joan Rivers to commit apostasy by worshipping a blasphemer who proclaimed himself to be God.

Was anybody’s head sawed off with a blunt knife?

Why are you so worked up over someone praying for what they believe would grant Ms Rivers salvation? Do you spend even half this outrage over radical Islam?

Imagine how a moslem would respond if you called Mohamad a “blasphemer. See any Christians rioting in response to your post?

You are not so shallow as that reply would indicate. The objection/offense is to the prayer for her conversion only. Ask your Jewish friends how much they’d appreciate your praying for their conversion to Christianity.

"In Judaism, "chosenness" is the belief that the Jews are the chosen people, chosen to be in a covenant with God. This idea is first found in the Torah (the first five books of the Tanakh, which are also included in the Christian Bible) and is elaborated on in later books of the Hebrew Bible. Much is written about these topics in rabbinic literature. The three largest Jewish denominations—Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism—maintain the belief that the Jews have been chosen by God for a purpose."

I’m not worked up, and I’m not Jewish. In fact, that is a close paraphrase of what a Rabbi friend from another discussion board told me in a discussion I was involved in after I gave a mostly positive review of the Passion of the Christ over 10 years ago.

Christians (for the most part) seem to be under the impression that Jews (for the most part) are pretty much neutral or just generally disinterested in Jesus. The truth is (and not unreasonably within the Jewish tradition) that he is generally much regarded as man who did very evil things. How exactly, do you feel about Mohammed? Most likely, that’s how Jews feel about Jesus. You would probably find it profoundly disrespectful if you asked people to pray for your mother member to recover and Muslims said, “Sure, but first we pray that Rides_A_Red_Horse’s mother accept the teachings of the ‘Prophet’ Mohammed and submit to Islam.” You probably wouldn’t be too happy about that, would you? That doesn’t mean that Jews and Christians ought to hate each other, but
there are definitely some thorny situations to avoid. This is one of them. Not everybody is going to get a warm, fuzzy feeling when you pray for their people become apostates and just write it off saying “he meant well.”

Was anybody’s head sawed off with a blunt knife?

At some point in the 2000 year history of Jewish-Christian relations. . . yeah probably.

“Why are you so worked up over someone praying for what they believe would grant Ms Rivers salvation?”

Maybe it’s just exhausting to watch a bunch of clueless people say something deeply offensive to somebody who is unlike them and then turn around and act shocked when they get offended. It doesn’t look like “praying for salvation” from their perspective, you might as well be praying for their damnation. But they are far too polite to tell you (all) that, so people dig in and daftly persist with the offense, more or less asking, “What’s the matter? Don’t you like it?”

Do you spend even half this outrage over radical Islam?”

No, I don’t “spend” my outrage I save it up for when I can do something about it If I knew any radical Muslims they wouldn’t be breathing any longer.

“Imagine how a moslem would respond if you called Mohamad a “blasphemer. See any Christians rioting in response to your post?”

My entire family (except me) is in the oil industry and because of that, I’m in an area that has a high percentage of Muslims (probably over 20%). As such I have had to work closely with Muslims, and I can tell you they put up with just that a lot more often than you’d think. . . they don’t need it from me they hear it all the time. Of course, most of the Muslims I do know are young (20s and 30s), and glad to be out of the hellhole that is the Middle East. They drink, they “eat around” the bacon on the pizza, they can’t really read Arabic at more than a first grade level, they threw parties when Bin Laden bit the dust, and they care more about the next smart phone or Iron Man movie than they do about closely following the tenets of Islam; and they universally don’t want their parents to know about any of that. They are for the most part normal people who, unfortunately, don’t want to break it to mom and dad that they don’t believe any of that nonsense.

Perhaps if you find it all “exhausting” you should just go to bed. I think you hyperbolize too much and are very PC and judgmental. You judge a bunch of well wishing Christians as “Clueless”? The apostle Paul had much to say about the “feelings of Jews towards Jesus” and nothing has changed in 2000 years. The Jews of the time tried to quash “the Way” in its cradle, killing and imprisoning many... before Gamaliel, a great rabbinical teacher spoke out(acts 5) suggesting that if the Christians were not of God the movement would die away but if it was of God, he cautioned those who would slay Peter and the apostles against it lest they be found fighting against God.

Thus the 2000 year stand off....To Hildy and all the other Jews on this Forum, I say God bless all of you, may he make his countenance fall upon you... but the Christians haven’t gone away yet!

As for Mohammed...I think if Christ had walked the Earth again in our day, seeking to reach Jews and Christians who had departed his statutes, he may have restated the “great Samaritan parable” as the great “Muslim parable” with the Muslim showing kindness to the robbed Christian and the robbed Jew, when everybody else left them both bleeding on the street!

And quote Talmud or Kabbalah or Zorah etc

I’d be grateful...not offended

Same blood on the door.

what about if I said to you, on your deathbed, I care about you, and I pray you disavow Jesus as your Lord and Savior in order to save your soul?

I don’t see praying for he soul is asking her to disavow anything

She’s in a coma

I’m not proselytizing to her

I’m praying on her behalf

Like I said... any Jews here wish to pray for me in their custom I welcome it

...this thread certainly did take an interesting turn...

...it was absurd for the OP to bring up proclaiming Christ as Savior for a Jew...I give the benefit of the doubt and assume he/she was not aware of that...as you correctly state, it was not praying but preaching...

...on your part, you made this issue more than it needed to be by ‘making a statement’ about it...acknowledging that this is a majority Christian board, and that perhaps fervor, not bigotry, caused the OP’ excesses, would have been preferable to dialing up the minority victim routine...

...some of the over the top remarks directed at you were, however, quite unfortunate...

I know a lot of Jews...maybe 100 plus in my life

Lived in Manhattan and Miami

Work Ramat Gan and Hatton Garden

It goes with territory....

I don’t think any woulda turned down a well meant prayer

Not even my Russian Jewish descended ex husband in law who was the absolute worst stereotype imaginable......a truly despicable man....but turn down a free prayer.....not likely

Not even him

I’ll ping someone knows him and loves him like me

God love Hildy....I thought she converted?
