From the start, little has been typical about Tesla Motors' plan for a $5 billion factory to make batteries for a new generation of electric cars.
It's not just the project's massive scale, the cutting-edge technology, or even the bonanza of 6,500 good-paying jobs.
It's how Tesla is deciding where to build.
Through a series of unusual plays, Tesla has five states bidding up subsidy packages to land the coveted plant. The winner is expected to offer the luxury car-maker publicly financed incentives exceeding a half-billion dollars.

First requirement, be a large state and get rid of any laws requiring that cars be sold by dealers.
That’s the ticket. Take money from existing businesses and give it to an upstart.
Crony capitalism...it’s the grease that lubes today’s depleted economy.
Hey, at least Tesla will actually be manufacturing something. A real, useful product. If they’re using it to gain some leverage, more power to them.
I tend to believe the latter. He's a billionaire that can afford to finance his broad claims and some of those claims seem to be baseless.
He got to be a Billionaire by finding investors. never invest all of your own money.
Telsa is a luxury car? Really? If they are, it must be if they were compared to a Yugo.
The winner is expected to offer the luxury car-maker publicly financed incentives exceeding a half-billion dollars............................................ What?? They can’t build that by themselves, they need the Government to show them how! I have a feeling that NY, Michigan, CA are out of the picture? I can see it going to one of the Right to work states.
That’s like NYS with it’s tax free for ten years shtick. Imagine being an established business in NY and a competitor relocates there and gets tax free status while you are trying to compete with them while paying all kinds of taxes.
You’re absolutely right.
However finding private investors that want to invest their money seems to be turning into a political scam to get taxpayers to invest whether they want to or not through a corrupt administration.
You haven’t driven one, have you? My children love their luxury vehicles. They live in So. Cal., one has a new Lexus, the other an Audi A-7, my son in law drives a Tesla, and my husband has a new vette. I’ll take the Tesla.
Tesla launches bidding war AGAINST taxpayers.
“Surely you can bleed those chumps drier than that?” He tells one state and then another.
Robbing the taxpayers is not leverage
Nope and I will NEVER drive one. That is why I sold my 2 Vertex and my 68 Cuda because I’m against government bailouts. The Telsa won’t ever be in my garage...
I hate this self correcting keyboard.. Vertex is supposed to be Vette. Sorry, all..
Tesla is outselling cars of this class -- aka "luxury class"
Oh yeah— the Tesla has a bigger range than a Rapide, and is FREE to charge at a Tesla super-station. Tank of gas on an Aston Martin 12 cylinder is not free. Currently, there are more than 110 super charging stations in the US.
“Robbing the taxpayers”???? You sound like a Democrat.....
Scam artist? He’s built a product thats used by millions (Pay Pal). He’s put rockets into space (Space X). He’s built an automobile that thousands are driving (Tesla). Real products. How does this constitute a “scam artist”?
