A Ukrainian naval vessel was in flames in the Azov Sea after being attacked by artillery from pro-Russian separatists along the shore.
Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said an emergency operation is under way to help rescue crew members.
Lysenko said the vessel is a naval cutter but it is not known how many people were onboard.
Pro-Russian insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack on social media websites.
Igor Strelkov, a former separatist military commander, said on VKontakte that the separatists have "dealt the enemy their first naval defeat."
Rebels backed by Russian forces seized the Ukrainian town of Novoazovsk and nearby territory last week in a major assault that led to gains in many parts of eastern Ukraine.
If pro-Russian forces are destroying Ukrainian naval vessels, then we ought to get a glimpse as to how hard and how seriously the Ukrainians can fight back. If this on-going conflict continues to limp along in a dithering fashion, then I would have to say that Ukraine knows it lost the war months ago.
“Standard US doctrine is that if an adversary takes out one of our carriers, then we don’t mess around: nukes becomes a very definite option.”
One some change, need to begin that with pre obola.
I’m not well read on naval warfare.
However, when a rebel infantry unit sinks one of your ships by firing artillery from the shoreline, that sounds rather humiliating.
Particularly when you are supposed to be a professional at naval warfare and the rebels are just supposed to be a bunch of rank amateurs.
shouldn’t your tag line be reversed? it makes no sense when you put idiot first. it should read:
“suppose you are a member of congress and then suppose you are an idiot, but i repeat myself”
When are we going to stop calling them that? Let's all just man up and call them what they are -- Russian military, using Russian weapons and supplies, with Russian training, and carrying out Russian orders.
U-170 Skadovsk or U-360 Henichesk? They’ve also got a small missile boat (if the Russians gave it back) and a handful of Grishnas.
Why are people still pretending these are “rebels”?
Ukraine just overthrew their pro-Russia corruptocrat a few months ago, their country and their military has been looted for 10 years or more.
Of course they cannot fight the Russian Army on equal terms.
Where are we pro-freedom insurgents going to get artillery when they leave us no option but rebellion? We KNOW where the separatists got theirs!
Perhaps how about having one of your ships sunk by the Russian military?
The Sea of Azov is not very large and it is entirely possible that the Ukraine Cutter had "nowhere to run to" and "nowhere to hide". It is also likely that it's guns were to small to effectively return fire.
I'd cut them some slack. Guys in a fishing craft blew a massive hole in the USS Cole. Artillery is fired from miles away, way out of anyone's field of vision. The Cole's attackers were amateurs. Trained Russian soldiers bushwhacked the Ukies.
The Russians know all about that in the battle at Port Arthur against the Japs.

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress." It's as true today as it was in Mark Twain's time. Maybe it's even more true today.
At Euromaidanpr they are saying it was and aerial attack. Plane or helicopter.
“At Euromaidanpr they are saying it was and aerial attack. Plane or helicopter.”
It’s EuromaidanPR, an affiliate of Right Sector. What are they gonna say?
The videos, and there are several, seem to catch the sound of some kind of Arty going out. And both were very close to the coast.
