The U.S. government and society need to recognize the direct connections between continuing racial disparities in this country and the wrongs that gave rise to them.
... One of the most important aspects of successful transitional justice, therefore, lies in illuminating not only the victims suffering, but the ways in which an entire society continues to bear the burdens of history. This helps elevate an important point: correcting injustice may require affirmative steps. The U.S. government and society need to recognize and educate citizens on the direct connections between continuing racial disparities in this country and the wrongs that gave rise to them, and to talk far more about the responsibilities we all share for repairing the damage. Perhaps Ferguson which has revealed what can happen when we suppress these conversations will finally motivate us to think about how to address the harms, whether through material reparations or otherwise. If were willing to start talking, well find no shortage of role models for transitional justice throughout the world to help us take the next steps.

Hands up, give us your wallets!
I agree...even if we paid one million dollars, in the end we’d come out ahead. I think a number of thugs would take the money thinking they’d be able to sneak back into the States. But every one we gave the money to would have a computer chip/tracking device implanted in them. If we found them back in the U.S., they would be shot on the spot.
One way to get them to relocate to Liberia or some other place in Africa is to threaten to move them to Detroit.
“How much do we have to bribe them to obey the law and not burn down their community?”
Bingo. You have to participate in civilized society in order to benefit from it.
PS — if you look at charts on who benefits most from Obamacare, that is clearly reparations.
Sorry, Belinda, but I think we’ve already affirmed the hell out of the situation. There’s just not enough affirming left in the bank.
I’m assuming they are not referring to the transition from street level thugs to defendants awaiting trial.
F*** Y*u!
Belinda, we don’t care what a White Guilt-laden academician thinks. My ancestors owned no slaves, no one alive was a slave, and we’re tired of the idea that another massive government wealth transfer scheme is going to solve anything.
People need to buckle down and get to work and not loot businesses in their neighborhoods over perceived injustice that idiots like you give misguided ideological cover for, just for starters.
No it wouldn’t. Even if payment was made, once the funds run out, they’d demanding more.
Maybe instead of the TRILLIONS we have already spent we do something different: Try that sh*t again and we cut of your welfare.
In a modern advanced free division of labor society, there is a powerful natural force at work which steadily operates to wash away all stains of past injustice. This is the fact that in such a society production is carried on for the market, and that property is gained or lost to the degree that one produces to the satisfaction of the market.
To the degree that reparations results in violent seizure of private property, it causes increased insecurity of private property. This works to destroy the modern advanced free division of labor society that naturally accomplishes the same thing as transitional justice.
Well then you better go find the descendants of the tribes in Africa that captured them and sold them to the slavers. If they hadn't repeatedly sold their own people down the river, there would have been fewer slaves on those ships coming to the New World.
Giving the money will only make the problem a whole lot worse. Theses people are poor because they don’t feel they need jobs and family. That makes them vindictive undisciplined and generally prone to mishap that results from the both.
Reparations how bout some REP for the raise in taxes for the last 40+ years on this issue, the Black race has taken from every race in the Union for their free homes and subsistence!
A disgrace to every hard working American that has funded this blight on the American society! In the Cry for Black suppression! The ones suppressed are the ones the Government has allowed to be taken from! Obama talks about redistribution of wealth well kids we have been redistributing wealth for decades! What has it done? Make more Ferguson’s that’s what!
So could an ISIS terrorist attack or coordinated civil disruption by Mexican cartels. Pick one, as long as it's not reparations, because it ain't gonna ever happen.
