Race Manners: Michael Browns death didnt cause a divide between you and the people in your social networks. It simply revealed one. Use the information youre getting to decide which relationships you value.
Dear Race Manners:
I have been so offended and angered by what some of my friends on Facebook have said about Michael Brown and the situation in Ferguson (he was a thug, he deserved it, black people destroy their own communities, blacks are criminals, all the police officers in Ferguson should quit because blacks dont appreciate them and more). I feel as though I dont know some of my former classmates. You would be shocked if I gave you the quotes, believe meso heartless and sometimes flat-out racist.
To be honest, my heart is already heavy for Michaels family and the Ferguson community and for the way we are seen and treated in this country, so sometimes I dont have the strength to respond, but Im both hurt and frustrated, not to mention angry. What to do? Anonymous
It's no surprise that you're seeing a racial divide in the reactions to what happened in Ferguson, Mo. A poll conducted by Pew showed that blacks are about twice as likely as whites to say that the shooting of Michael Brown "raises important issues about race that need to be discussed."
To be clearas plenty of people pointed out to me on Twitter when I shared those resultsthat doesn't mean that only nonwhite people care about Brown's death or are sensitive to the racial dynamics of this week's events in Ferguson, including the treatment of protesters in the predominantly black town by a militarized police force....

I tried it. And closed my account. Waste of time.

“Am I the only person left who doesn’t live on Facebook and Twitter?”
Nope. Never on silly twitter, dropped information-harvesting Facebook a while back.
I read twitter but never post. Facebook holds no interest for me. Perhaps I should read it because, I’m totally unable to comprehend what’s happening in and about Ferguson. Maybe the racism of Sen. T. Bilbo has been flipped on its head and implanted in blacks.
Brilliant!!!
FR is my Facebook/Twitter
I've yet to use Facebook for that purpose. I also don't tweet. I would wager that the great majority of FB users are females, but I have no facts to back up that assertion.
Apparently now you can get a phone that just plugs into the wall and you don’t have to lug it around with you, so that once people find out you have what they call a “home phone” they will stop pestering you with constant messages and status updates. You can even ignore the home phone and configure it so it won’t record a message.
I’ve been waiting for this breakthrough since 2040.
That was funny.
90 percent of what I put on my page are for my benefit only. Music, books, calendar events and news articles. My personal library and database. Plus some fellow hobbyists and family
LOL. Y’all are killing me tonight.
Hey Jim, all of these non facebooking freepers and non twitters got me thinking. Maybe you can incorporate a facebook type of deal where freepers can friend each other, share thoughts without a story and link hot topics on the main page. I would definitely chip in for something like that.
I have no use for any other of the social meathead connections, except YouTube, where if somebody is an idiot, they show it rather quickly. That includes Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Infogram, or any other I forgot.
“Am I the only person left who doesn’t live on Facebook and Twitter?”
I guess there are two of us because I don’t live on Facebook and Twitter either.
Nope.
Don’t exactly live on twitter, but it’’s handy as a news feed, especially for breaking stories.
FB - Got two accounts. One for my writing work and one rarely used one for family only. Our family is a bit scattered and none of us are much ones for talking unless it’s face to face. We’re probably one of the few families left that prefer to send each other actual, physical letters.
I would rather have 1 real friend than 100 electronic ones!
