Five years ago, in July 2009, the average price for a pound of ground beef was $2.147, according to the BLS. In those five years, the average price has climbed by $1.737 per pound--or almost 81 percent.

Was just at the grocery store. This is true.

But there’s no inflation, because people will choose ground turkey instead, right?

Boy, these folks aren’t slow on the uptake(sar.) Beef prices have been through the roof for years. At my local Shop Rite sirloin steak is $12.99 a pound.

Profit taking.

The price of corn is crashing (so much so it is going to hurt the economy). One of the major buyers of our beef, pork, and chicken is mad at us (Russia) and has cut off imports.

The drought is shifting beef production away from the Plains to the Midwest, but numbers are still good.

In other words, be careful buying to many beef futures.

There is no inflation because the price of giant wide screen HDTVs has been coming down and the price of a Mercedes Benz SLS is just about the same as last year.

If the rise in food prices was important the Obama administration would tell us.

Raccoon - The Other Dark Meat

Raccoon is making it to the table

Raccoon, which made the first edition of The Joy of Cooking in 1931, is labor-intensive but well worth the time, aficionados say.

"Good things come to those who wait," says A. Reed, 86, who has been eating raccoon since she was a girl.

Raccoons go for $3 to $7 — each, not per pound — and will feed about five adults. Four, if they're really hungry.

At most of the stores around here, hamburger is $5.00 a pound or more.

Beef isn’t at an all time high, the dollar is at an all time low.

Buy larger packages.

Sams Club:
4.5 lbs or more: $3.29/lb for 80% (best for grilling), $3.59/lb for 90% (best for non-grilling recipes) all Angus. And that is Connecticut prices.

Bring it home, divide into small portions.

I buy my beef by the side from Mount Aerial Beef in Kentucky. I get steaks, roasts, and plenty of ground beef. In the end I end up paying $5.20 a pound.

In the end it’s probably on par with what you get in the store nowadays because of the T-bones and other premium meat included.

$5.20 is expensive, but I think it’s worth it, and I’m supporting a local farmer...plus I would never buy t-bones otherwise.

I've got a tip. Use shredded dollars as hamburger helper.

It's cheaper and helps your burger dollar go farther.

I was looking to buy a steak this week but at the local Albertson’s it was $12 and up. Hamburger was too much but surprisingly the pork chops were 2 for $3.29 So I had pork chops.

Here we are wondering if we can afford basics while the gov’t “leaders” are spending our money for their vacations and eating whatever they want.
