WASHINGTON Affectations can be dangerous, as Gertrude Stein said.
When Barack Obama first ran for president, he theatrically cast himself as the man alone on the stage. From his address in Berlin to his acceptance speech in Chicago, he eschewed ornaments and other politicians, conveying the sense that he was above the grubby political scene, unearthly and apart.
He began Dreams From My Father with a description of his time living on the Upper East Side while he was a student at Columbia, savoring his lone-wolf existence. He was, he wrote, prone to see other people as unnecessary distractions. When neighbors began to cross the border into familiarity, I would soon find reason to excuse myself. I had grown too comfortable in my solitude, the safest place I knew.
His only kindred spirit was a silent old man who lived alone in the apartment next door. Obama carried groceries for him but never asked his name. When the old man died, Obama briefly regretted not knowing his name, then swiftly regretted his regret.
But what started as an affectation has turned into an affliction.

Sir, you unfairly malign skunks.
> Good Lord, people. It’s twenty-some posts in — we gots rules.
Yeah, really folks. OHFTCZJP

Yeah, I kept waiting for the Bush bashing part.
A little late to the party aren't you Mo?
The university Communists and the low information voters are to blame for electing this deformed personality to the highest office in the land, not once but twice. The Founders were absolutely right about not wanting to establish a democracy. Too bad their warnings weren’t heeded.
Every time I see this picture, I wonder how many goats he found “attractive”.... ((((((shudder))))))
Uh, sounds sorta like Obama was ISIS before ISIS was cool.
"The buck is lying!
LOLOL!
Wow! I never noticed that before! Good catch.
Yeah, I bet he had loads of more-or-less anonymous “buddies” in his college years and beyond.
I have been looking at this all day and I think they are not holding hands.
It looks like Obama has his hand under his boot.
And, Abu has his hand under his leg. You can see flesh in both cases.
But, they were probably holding hands just prior to the photographer whipping out his camera.
You know, if he really WAS a loner, that’s kinda sad. And it explains a lot.
I know more than a few people who are antisocial. In many cases they WANT to be social but don’t know how because of Aspergers or something, and in other cases they don’t want to be social at all—and yet, they still crave approval. But because there’s no one around to sand down the proverbial rough edges, their initial beliefs never become tempered by living in the real world.
And if you say just ONE thing that contradicts what one of these people have decided, the counterattack is VICIOUS. As if you’re some kind of mythical monster who slithered up out of the ichor-filled depths just to proclaim that horrible thing. And I suspect that the reason is because of the endless self-reinforcement that being a loner brings.
Not that it excuses him from being one of the most horrible people in the world at the moment, but it’s sad that he developed this way.
It’s quite interesting to read some of the comments to the article.
Some still 100% support him and go into all the reasons he is a hero and the republicans are rats, some come out and say they voted for him and are let down, and only a few (like me) flat out said they didn’t vote for him and why (I wouldn’t hire him to run my company since he’s never run anything but his mouth).
What is amazing to me that despite all the evidence to the contrary apparently intelligent people support a failure.
It’s interesting that you mention Aspergers or anti-social. I think my daughter’s almost ex second husband might have this - truly a loner. A good guy, not stupid, but just cannot adjust to getting along in society.
Eeeeeeccchhh! Just look at that smugness. Please do not refer me to this picture anymore, I may need to upchuck...
