WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced Monday morning that he would call in the National Guard to Ferguson after Sunday proved the worst night of violent clashes since the shooting of Michael Brown last week. The governor's executive order came just moments after Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said new security measures were under discussion but did not include bringing in National Guard troops.
But Nixon, who declared a state of emergency in Ferguson Friday, said the move was necessitated by "the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state."
Johnson, whose appointment last week to take over security from local police initially calmed tensions, said a small group of agitators determined to "provoke a response" were to blame for Sunday night's unrest.
Speaking at an early morning news conference, Johnson said police responded to a shooting among the protesters around 8:25 p.m., nearly four hours before a midnight curfew was set to begin for the third straight night. He said shots were fired and molotov cocktails thrown at officers as businesses, including a McDonald's were looted.
Officers responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets, again donning the riot gear and driving armored vehicles that prompted a public outcry condemning the militarization of police last week.
Meanwhile, thousands who tuned into a live stream of the protests online watched as police appeared to warn protesters to back off, then firing canisters of tear gas just seconds later, while children were still among the crowd.
Several journalists reported being briefly detained by police and cuffed using plastic restraints. One officer pointed a gun at Argus radio's Mustafa Hussein, in full view of the live stream feed, threatening to shoot him if "he didn't get the [expletive] out of here."
Johnson said three protesters were injured, and a spokesman of the Highway Patrol said seven or eight people were arrested.
Having the moochers and race pimps turn on him after kissing their asses on national TV has left the Governor with a bitter taste in his mouth.
Top ten or five of the year, I’d say.
Race Baiters channeling a little Hamas, bringing children to a riot.
A small group of ^communist^ agitators sent in by Obama/Holder. Just doing the community organizin’ job real Americans won’t do.
Bad Parenting, 101. LOL!!
Hear that Sharpton? He's talking about YOU!
One bad apple on ANY police force is one bad apple too many.
COP CAMS would prevent many or ALL of these sorts of tragedies. (To be effective, these devices MUST be “ON” during the entire shift and any officer whose device fails to capture the event under investigation or attempts to defeat the device should be summarily dismissed.)
IF THE OFFICER IN THE MICHAEL BROWN SHOOTING HAD WORN A COP CAM, ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN SETTLED and Ferguson, MO wouldn’t be burning every night and Al Sharpton and the other racist agitators would have to get REAL jobs (if they could find them).
And let’s all remember that even cops and elected officials have families, any one of which could become the victim of the senseless act of some rogue cop who’s having a bad day and wants to pass it on.
Obama golfs while Missouri burns.
Tear gas and rubber bullets aren’t going to stop anything. OTOH, if the officers shot anyone, it all would have exploded. The NG won’t be able to do anything different. The ‘hood won’t chill back to its normal thuggery until the “paid for” rioters get tired and go home. And take Jesse and Al with them.
Any pictures yet?
Ferguson police dept. has been granted monies for cameras and other tech devices but they haven’t installed them yet.
1. - I wouldn't categorize police officer Darren Wilson as a bad apple.
On the contrary, the more we learn the more it seems he is a good cop who was just doing his job and faced a deadly confrontation precipitated by Michael Brown.
2. - Wouldn't the use of COP CAMS be an issue to be addressed by the local government and the policie department rather than the individual police officer?
Why was my “Hug a Thug” headline edited. It is straight from GOPUSA.
I saw one. There were four soldiers. One had a 9mm on his leg. The rest had water bottles.
evil water bottles!
Did they have those full-auto sport tops??
Imagine that! Obamas’ sons screwing over the town, but the great and mighty oz is going to bring in the feds to determine why a 300 pound thug with possible drugs in his system was shot by the officer at which he was charging. I wouldn’t stop shooting until he was down either.
