"The only thing you are likely to see in a chief’s hand is a coffee mug. It is the young E-1s through E-5s who perform all the maintenance tasks that keep the ships moving and the aircraft flying."

I don't know what you do for a living .. or did, if you're retired, but I'm retired blue collar and I've been around long enough to know a lot of people get paid for what they know rather than what they do.

I was one of 'em for a year or two ... and personally ... you can HAVE it ... but the fact remains .... some white hats drink coffee and watch the work .... it just is.

You obviously never made it.

I work with a retired chief. He’s one of the best co-workers I’ve ever had. He tells some great stories. I’ll show him this and I bet he’d agree with you.

What do you think the Chiefs did before becoming a chief?

Stop and think really, really hard. They went to Chief school....no no no. They joined the Navy as a Chief....no no no.

The correct answer is: They worked their asses off as the lower echelon until they EARNED the rank of chief!

You were very disrespectful to the Chiefs. I won’t stand for it.

Who’s actually going to run the Navy without the chiefs?

They are the ones that actually makes it all work. Decapitate the Navy, it would still work. All you need is the chiefs.

Why not whack a few admirals instead?

The chiefs I knew had been out of the nuts and bolts of maintenance for a while. While not much changes for a boiler tech over the years, the chiefs in the high tech fields were way out of date in training. In fact, the questionnaires for chief asked practically nothing about their rating as a chief is no longer expected to turn a wrench but become a low level supervisor.

“There are always plenty of qualified sailors to take their places.”

The Navy has been cutting upper enlisted ranks for a while now. Any blemish on your service record, and you don’t get renewed.

I know a couple of guys that have gone through this. One got pushed out for a DWI, and another got renewed, simply because he is a Diver/underwater repairman, which I’m told is a rare specialty, especially given what these guys can make in civilian life.

The Navy is getting smaller, and lower ranks need to move up, and train. You can always call the older guys back, if you need them.

Were you in the Navy? If so you know that E-1s through E-5s do ALL the maintenance work on the ships and aircraft. E-6s were shop supervisors who assigned tasks and filled out watch assignments. E-7s usually had not turned a wrench in years. Even more so for senior chiefs and master chiefs. In fact, the questionnaires for those ranks required little knowledge of the equipment and focused on how good of a manage you would be.

Actually, the 8000 number is not the total being cut. 8000 chiefs who are eligible for retirement will have their service records reviewed. No quota for forced retirements has been assigned to the review board. Criteria for possible forced retirement are 1. notation of significant problems in evaluations 2. evaluations below 2.99, 3.two or more physical fitness test failures, 4 moral or dereliction such as detachment for cause. The Navy has held such review boards several times in the last few years. Of 30,500 chiefs service records reviewed by these boards, a total of 1,381 chiefs have been forced to retire. This is 4.48 percent dismissal rate. Looking back over my 25 years in the Navy, I can recall 4 or 5 percent of CPOs, I worked with deserved to have the anchors ripped of their collars and their asses booted down the gang way.

Chiefs are more low level managers than anything else. They can be replaced.

They are technical managers, at the top of a very technical Navy. Just saying...

Exactly. You can’t make cuts only to the E-1s to E-6s and leave the Navy top heavy with chiefs, senior chiefs and master chiefs looking to max out their retirement benefits.

Managers whose technical training is often very out of date. 99.9% of the avionics technician chiefs wouldn’t know how to even start the computers that tested the equipment on board. Which is fine because they are not expected to know how.

To: I want the USA back

Actually, it is your fearless Congress. They passed the sequester. You want less government spending...it HAS to come from defense It’s not going to come from pensions or social security.

I have a question for you. Let's suppose the Navy really needs to ax 8,000 Chief positions. And let's suppose some of those Chiefs had 18 or 19 years of service, not enough for a pension.

Would it make sense to reduce some of those Chiefs to a lower rating, and let them get their 20 years? I'm not asking if it's possible. I'm asking if it would make sense.

The reason I bring this up is because many years ago a friend of the family was an air force lieutenant colonel with 17 years in. And he was passed for promotion to full colonel.

The air force let him serve 3 more years as a master sergeant.

Most of my life my dad was XO or CO. Destroyer Marshall(XO), Destroyer Tender Prairie (XO), Communications ship Arlington (XO/CO), Naval Station San Diego (XO). He always reminded me that "the chiefs run the Navy". They are the skilled middle management layer with "hands on" experience. Dad spent time as the port 5" gunnery officer on USS Iowa during the Korean conflict and later as engineering officer on other vessels before I was age 4.

Sorry, but elections have consequences.
America you elected this anti-American, communist, liberal piece of trash - twice!

You’re correct. Unfortunately, the fools who voted for this clown....not once, but TWICE...are likely giddy with this announcement.

Disgusting.
