Two young Amish sisters were sexually abused after their abduction from a roadside farm stand in northern New York, a prosecutor said Saturday.
St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain's disclosure came hours after the county's sheriff said the couple charged in the kidnapping were prowling for easy targets and may have planned to abduct other children.
Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey, both of Hermon, were arrested and arraigned Friday on charges they abducted the 7-year-old and 12-year-old sisters with the intent to physically or sexually abuse them.
"We felt that there was the definite potential that there was going to be other victims," St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said.
The sisters were abducted Wednesday from the farm stand in front of the family's home in Oswegatchie, near the Canadian border. They were set free by their captors about 24 hours later and turned up safe at the door of a house 15 miles from where they were taken.
The sheriff said Howells, 39, and Vaisey, 25, "were targeting opportunities" and did not necessarily grab the girls because they were Amish.

Castration with a chainsaw.
how these people are punished will determine the probability of repeat occurrence by others.
justice for such crimes should be swift, gruesome, and PUBLIC ... then you'll see a SHARP decline in such crimes
NY doesn’t have the death penalty. Pity that.
The article says the girls were ‘set free’ by their captors? Does that make sense?
I was afraid of this. I had hoped the girls had somehow escaped any sort of abuse after being kidnapped, but that was wishful thinking.
As for the perps... dig a deep hole, put them in it, shovel dirt over top. Nuff said.
I agree with both of you. This is probably not their first crime, nor would it have been their last. Scum like this doesn’t stop until they are stopped.
You need only convict then put them in general population in Attica. Let nature will take it’s course.

People underestimate the ‘power’ behind decisions to act on perverted sexual fantasies. It begins in entering the idea in the mind.... stimulated often by visual porn and a pre-occupation with viewing it.
All addictions work the same.
DNA tests need to be run on these children to determine if one or both of these individuals are actually the bio-parent(s). These three could have been kidnapped, too, at some point in their young lives. Just french fries? That’s weird, too.
Oh I’m sure the police are way ahead of these two....they’ll find other evidence things haven’t been on the up and up for a long time I think.
Folks, the article does not support the title. The crimes the perps are charged with are “intent” crimes, as well.
These girls do not need a rumor to further shame them.
ABC, your reporting sucks.
No....how they’re punished will not stop repeated occurrences by others. Our society feeds this type of behavior on a daily....in one form of sexual perversion or another. Further we no longer protect children in this nation or we wouldn’t be killing them by the millions.
There is no sanctity of “life”...there fore criminal acts such as this and others will increase despite those who get caught and the punishment they may or not get.
when I was little I would regularly sell strawberries at the end of my road.. by myself..my road was in a suburban/rural area with a county road, well traveled...I must have been about 8 or 10....that was in NYS as well...
I have lived among the Amish all my life.
I shop at a dented can store operated by the most polite Amish people you could imagine.
Every other Sunday all I see on the roads are buggy tracks headed in a certain direction to the home of an Amish persons place for church.
These are the people who I love being surrounded by,
You can take the losers from Ferguson, MO and keep them!
I truly love my neighbors and feel good about them BEING MY NEIGHBORS!
Why stop at “legal”? How about extermination?
I lived in Lancaster so I’m well aware of who the Amish are and about. They have their own issues like all other communities.
Why stop at legal? How about extermination?
Extermination fits the end, but some real pain is the punishment!!
“Just french fries?”
Sometimes one gets just french fries for a snack, or if you’re a light eater like me it can even be a vegetarian lunch. Not that I’m a big french fry fan, unless it’s Nathan’s - their french fries are THE BEST.
Sorry, off topic on a serious thread, I guess I am feeling hungry here at 3:30 AM.
Sigh, people feel safe in rural areas, but as a big city girl I always doubt that’s true.
It’s basically a matter of the odds.
To my mind there are probably fewer bad people in rural areas, because there are just fewer people.
But my concern is always that if some bad person does come along, there are no other people around to help.
And in this case their family was right there, but not close enough to stop the abduction.
