A Navy investigation finds the ailing skipper of a San Diego-based Navy cruiser retreated to his cabin for several weeks in the middle of a deployment, leaving the 330-member crew leaderless.
The probe also revealed that the skipper of the USS Cowpens, Capt. Gregory W. Gombert, was having an improper and "unduly familiar" relationship with the cruiser's acting executive officer, U-T San Diego reported Wednesday.

Whats that? Oh, I forgot. That sort of thing doesn't happen anymore. Nope, it can't happen at all...At all...
Being performed by an officer? LOL!
In peacetime? Very few.
In combat, with the ship hit and in flames, and the need to wrestle heavy hoses to put out fires, drag wounded men to safety, and wrestle heavy metal patches into place at holes to stop water from flooding in? Potentially quite a lot.
For how long? A half hour drill? How many hours were people working damage control on the USS Cole?
The Cowpens must be an unlucky ship; one of the previous CO’s was no other than “horrible” Holly Graf who was fired for physically and verbally abusing the crew, and falsifying the ship’s log.
After Horrible Holly, an absentee skipper might have been a welcome reprieve. Still, that doesn’t excuse his conduct as a CO. One thing I admire the Navy for: unlike my old branch (the USAF), the naval service is quick to get rid of COs, XOs and CMCs who don’t measure up.
Just about covers her agenda.
Good question. I don't know. I wasn't among the men and women who kept USS Cole from sinking.
Cole was a co-ed ship. In fact, 2 out of the 17 sailors killed were female. But they kept their ship afloat.
What? Pole dancing?
they say that in the Army the women are mighty fine, well they look like Phyllis Diller and march like Frankenstein...
saw that w my 1sg in Iraq.
A very small child
I have a couple more years at sea than you have in the Navy (all on Submarines), retired as a Red Stripe Senior Chief.
Also spent 4 years in the USMC before joining the Navy.
I agree with your statement and confirm it. The Israeli Army (IDF) does it right. They assign females to tasks that they can accomplish, and, also, assign males to tasks that they can accomplish. Not according to some fancy feel good politically correct policy, but according to ability.
Sorry that I didn’t reply sooner, I was out killing the last remaining healthy brain cells that I had.
Semper Fi and I wish you following seas and smooth sailing.

“perform just fine.”
Maybe you believe that; I don’t.
She, at least, looks like she could out-run the porker on the right.

“Fun-sized”
In war she could be a tunnel rat.
I used to date a short girl; while she was self-conscious about it (successfully begging Motor Vehicles to put 5’ on her license when she was 4’ 11”), I’d tell her it was cool that she could fit in small spaces like a hobbit. We never saw eye-to-eye on it...
And your reply is proof of just how far we have fallen from being truly combat ready and how deep the kool-aid drinkers have eroded the warrior ethos.
