The U.S. is weighing a military mission in Iraq to rescue thousands of Yazidi refugees, a move that risks putting American forces in direct confrontation with Sunni fighters for the Islamic State.
The proposal is still under development and hasn't been approved by President Barack Obama. U.S. officials said the rescue mission is one of many options the U.S. military is weighing after dropping food and water to dying refugees over the past six days.
"People are looking at ways to do something more than just drop water and supplies," one senior U.S. official said. "You can only do that for so long."
Since last week, the U.S. has sought to halt the militants' advance on the Kurdish city of Erbil and to relieve Yazidis trapped by the fighters on a barren mountain range through a campaign of airstrikes and aid drops.
A rescue mission could expose U.S. forces to direct fire from the militant group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and that is a risk Mr. Obama may not be willing to accept.
On Tuesday, the Pentagon continued to lay the groundwork for a rescue by sending another 130 military advisers to northern Iraq to develop options the Pentagon can present to the president. The team will be made up of U.S. Marines and members of American special operations forces who have expertise in difficult missions.

“It is almost to damn late!”
The scenario you outline in your last paragraph does not deal with this situation. The victims are spread out on a montain range 25 miles long and 4 miles wide where they were chased by ISIS on the plains below. Rescue personnel, medics and defenders will have to be spread out over that whole lone stretch to find the people who have collapsed, are dying of thirst, etc. The landing zones will probably not need to be secured, and few if any bomb wearing infiltrators are likely to be there. Long distance shelling may occur. And specific plans to return those attacks may be needed.
There is no rescue. That time passed 10 years ago. Now, we see the results of absolute inaction.
How utterly sad.
Obama’s thinking is that the Yazidis are an endangered group while Christians are not. It’s not the individuals that matter, it’s the group. Typical leftist group identity politics.

Yes ! Dump Obama and resume the WAR on radical Islam
Support Israel and jointly take out all elements of radical islam in the region . Attack their supply lines , kill their leadership . Pound them relentlessly . No quarter .
It starts with removal of Obama and his regime .
I remember them from a few years ago when a horrific video was posted of a village stoning a young girl for wearing thong underwear or somesuch.
The bottom line is that he hates Christians.
What’s needed are rough riders, not under the auspices of the US government. Where and how to find and equip people with the necessary skills and get them over there is the big question, but the US military is under the command of the US government, and even with a good, decisive POTUS, they don’t do this sort of thing well.
There you go.
France and the UK are either going to or are discussing, helping too.

He’s let Christians be massacred and ethnically cleansed for years now, but let the Yazidi Zoroastrians get threatened, and all of a sudden it’s an issue.
This is further evidence of Obama being one odd anti-Christian duck.

1000’s of foreigners with no education in a neighboring country cross into our country —> Humanitarian Crisis!
ISIL needs to be confronted but Obama should stop this humanitarian charade and tell the American people that our national security is being threatened by ISIL and militant Islamic fundamentalism. If we really wanted to protect our people in Irbil, we would remove them forthwith.
