SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A hostage kidnapped during a Northern California bank robbery was killed by police in an ensuing chase and shootout, likely during a final gunbattle where the lone surviving suspect used her as a human shield, authorities said Monday.
The results of a preliminary ballistics report show that police in the city of Stockton fired the 10 bullets that struck Misty Holt-Singh, 41, and all her wounds likely came during a final burst of gunfire, Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones said at a news conference.

Officer Terminator: "I didn't fear for her life."
Perhaps criminals are shooting at them from behind a hostage? That does tend to make things rather dicey.
Even in the best of circumstances, the odds of saving a hostage in a running gun battle are very poor. Most police officers aren't really that good at shooting either. Life simply doesn't work like the movies.
Why did the police allow the final suspect to even survive? In times past police would have finished him off without a second thought.
Sad....but I figured that was the case already...I’m frankly shocked they admitted it...
We should start disarming some of the police and make it a privilege to carry and not SOP.
That, and the police are being trained to CONFRONT at all costs.
They're not fracking super-heroes, so they need to lighten up.
“police shot hostage 10 times”
This reminds me of Al Capp’s “Fearless Fosdick” cartoons.
You'd think that after she'd danced for the first 6 or 7 bullets, the shooters would have realized that THEY WERE NOT NOT MAKING THINGS BETTER.
My vote: privilege to carry. I'm with you, Usagi.
Who gets to do the cop press conference?
This is how the new police state saves people.
Police in combat shootings (against armed opponents) can rarely hit any target more than 20% of the time. This has been well-known for decades by researchers in that field. When facing continued fire most people cannot even shoot that well for more than half a minute. In a sustained gun battle, there will always be a lot of bullet holes in places where they were not wanted.
"One or two errant shots" is an unrealistic expectation.
And about 30% of hostages are killed when criminals keep shooting from behind them.
Some problems do not have happy solutions.
Very sad. Her 12yo daughter was waiting in the car in the parking lot for mom to come out of the bank.
2 other women were kidnapped and were thrown or escaped from the moving vehicle. They are recovering.

When was that past?
Sounds like Chode & Usagi have the right of it, then.
De-escalation, rather than CONFRONTATION, and make it a privilege for a King's Man to be armed.
The three perps took three hostages from the bank, shot the first hostage driver when she wasn't driving good enough for them and then kicked her out of the car all while firing an "AK47" type weapon at the following cops. They took police on an hour long chase through the central valley, shooting up the place as they went. Later they kicked out the second hostage. The car was finally cornered where the final shootout occurred.
All three perps were gang members(Norteno) with criminal records. Two of the cops go to our church; they tried to make the best of a very bad situation. The nineteen year old pulled the last hostage over him when the final shootout happened, she died and he lived. He's a coward, hiding behind a woman.
The cops are pretty sure these three had robbed this bank before. This was our bank branch and it is now closed permanently.
so I see that Free Republic has some tourists from the “ better surrendering on my knees and avoid that inconvenient fight on my feet” DU land. Geez everybody here is wearing me out. Are you guys so overrun with rabid animals from Mexico that you are suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome? It was a friggin’ Yahoo (AP) story. These gangbangers had a ball on their way out and they got just what the Mexican consulate wanted..a bunch of hate-the-cops apologists.
The thugs who took this woman hostage are most likely gang affiliated and may well be illegal.....that area of California has serious MS-13 involvement
More likely MS 13
