Angry Republican Leaders Ready To Shut Door On Open Primaries Changes sought after Mississippi Democrats help Thad Cochran beat Chris McDaniel

“I have been a longtime supporter of closed primaries to choose our candidates for office,” said Chairman of the Republican National Committee Reince Priebus, “this is a position I have held for a long time and is consistent with the ... more > By Ralph Z. Hallow - August 6, 2014 CHICAGO — Any party that allows its opponents to help pick its candidates in “open” primaries is a PPINO — a “political party in name only” — say many Republican officials at their annual summer meeting.

Republican National Committee members and activists are still seething about reports that longtime Sen. Thad Cochran, Mississippi Republican, enlisted Democrats to help him win his tough primary contest this summer against state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who was backed by the tea party.

I’m all for deciding whom to choose as a Presidential candidate by holding the first primaries only in closed primary states, that way we don’t wind up with John McCain, Mitt Romney or Bob Dole!
********************************
That’s really not a bad idea! I like it! Really tired of the old caucus system in Iowa and then the fool voters in VT being the first two States that set the tone.

The reason so many states went to open primaries is because the “independent” voter was locked out of the primaries since in many states closed primaries are for the party you belong to....

Your point doesn’t apply in States like Texas that don’t require voters to be registered for a specific party.

Thank you for pointing out the funding issue. It’s more complicated and entrenched than I thought, since I was not aware of candidates getting rich off of keeping public funds that are left over.

By the way, NY is a blue state but the primaries are not open. I don’t know whether that is the law or not. There is certainly plenty of money here for the parties to fund their own primaries but I don’t think they do.

Priebus would not want to get into funding primaries from the national party, even if it did suit his political purposes, since he is all about money.

>> It varies from state to state. In Mississippi, it is state law that prevents closing primaries <<

Tut tut! Don’t be giving us facts like that! You’ll spoil all the fun being had on this thread by those who have a desperate need to vent!

Well Reince, don’t be surprised when Ole Miss goes Democrat.

You either stand for something or fall for anything. The GOPe caused this.

There is no excuse for RED states putting up RINO’s like Thad Cochran. He is guaranteed Appropriations Chair IF he wins.

That is now in jeopardy all because of the GOPe and their need for power over policy.

"I'm all for deciding whom to choose as a Presidential candidate by holding the first primaries only in closed primary states, that way we don't wind up with John McCain, Mitt Romney or Bob Dole! "

That sounds like a much better process- I would also prefer that the first primaries went to the reddest (last election) closed primary states.

They’re annoyed by this? I thought they’d planned it that way to get the desired outcome.

Open primaries are insane. Why would the GOP ever want to let Dems vote in our primaries?

Well, they don't; necessarily need to be held in the “reddest states” but at the very least, not in places like Iowa, where students and paid stooges drive over from Illinois to “participate in their caucus” and we always wind up with people the liberals would most like to run against (aka losers that don't ever energize the conservative base, again like Dole, McCain or Romney), the same people that promise to never give a hard time to a Democrat candidate!

Reince must be sacked. This is what happens when you lose a presidential election. He lost the last election. He needs to go. He’s also very annoying on TV.

Basically, a Party Primary is a private party affair. Involving the state, especially if there is a funding issue, means that ALL the citizens may have the right to participate.

The problem in MS was that those specifically invited to participate had, in many cases, already voted in the Democrat primary. That was against the state's own rules.

in re the "Leftovers."

This is heavily abused by retiring long-term Congressmen, who always make sure the odd million or two is tucked away in the campaign treasury.

Serving in Congress is an incredibly lucrative deal. Why do you think politics attracts so many essentially failed small town lawyers? BTW, I don't mean to harp on federal representatives. This goes for your state legislator yahoos as well, extending down to mayors, and any other elected officials.

My hero Pat Buchanan, known in our college years as the "Coldcocker," and his sister Birch cleverly raised money until they qualified for federal matching funds, and then cleverly spend not another dime! $10 Million+. And all legal.

Yes, I know. Mississippi had other issues.

The law can still be changed. A good argument for changing it might be that the way it is, it is an open invitation to this kind of fraud. Or else the Republican Party could decide to fund its own primaries, if that is the law in MS, and thereby keep them closed.

My mother taught me long ago not to leave your money or possessions anywhere where they might tempt thieves. Don’t lead a weak person into temptation, even unwittingly.

“Barbour sued to get closed primaries in Mississippi. He lost.”

I don’t remember that, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Would you, please, provide a link so that I can read about it?

I’m not questioning you. I may have missed it, but would very much like to read up on it.

Thanks!

Close the gate after the mule gets out of barn Mississippi bump!

I will believe it when I see it. It might be too late for MS.

OTOH, could the party leadership see troubles ahead? Could they really feel the anger? I certainly hope so!
