There was high drama on the Senate floor this evening. Harry Reid brought on for a vote President Obamas $2.7 billion proposal to support illegals from Central America who are flooding across the border, in the form of a supplemental budget request. An extremely knowledgeable Senate insider offers this blow-by-blow account of what happened:
It required 60 votes to waive that point of order. After failing to table the filled amendment tree, Sessions raised the point of order. Appropriations Committee Chair Mikulski, author of the legislation, moved to waive all points of order on the bill. Dems failed to waive the point of order, by a vote of 50 yeas and 44 nays, with Manchin again voting with Republicans.
So the Senate immigration supplemental appropriations bill is dead.
This is very good news, although of course it would be better news if Congress would stand up to the presidents lawless and unconstitutional determination to repeal federal statutes by executive decree. For now, though, lets be grateful, once again, to Senator Jeff Sessions, who stood in the gap and, this time, prevailed.

A contentious showdown like this could almost give you the impression that republicans and democrats aren’t the same.
There were serious problems with the Boehner bill.
While the appropriations sections of the bill are a great improvement over the President's request, and focus government spending more directly on repatriation of the families and children who crossed in the surge, the sections of the bill addressing the processing of unaccompanied alien children are little more than a repackaging of the worst elements of the HUMANE Act.
There is nothing in the provisions of Division B of this bill that merits serious consideration by any member of Congress truly interested in abating the flow of minors and family units northward.
I second that. Jeff Sessions or Ted Cruz would be great nominees. We need to change the direction of the GOP, which has been taken over by the corporate elites. Both parties have abandoned the American worker.
That is not to say he isn't involved , as are others, but I will stand on Cruz being the lead in this matter as it was Cruz who met with them all Wednesday in a private meeting.
I believe Cruz has stated that it's not significant who gets the credit, with things as they are in congress, it's that things get done. Further Sessions taking the lead on the floor was the right thing to do since the democrats would love nothing else but to blame this on Cruz...which they already are.
Jeff Sessions is one of the few truly good guys.
Please everyone get this on twitter.........tweet it
I agree. Sessions has been the one consistently opposed to our open borders.
The American worker is too uninformed that he has no voice representing him.
praise and PRAYERS for Jeff Sessions!
God Bless Jeff Sessions.....
I have called and thanked him before...
I will call again!!!!!!
Cruz has only come recently to the issue. Sessions led the fight against the Gang of 8 bill meeting with House GOP members. He prepared a lengthy briefing paper on the Gang of 8 bill and immigration and distributed it to every GOP member of the House.
Sessions led the fight against the McCain-Kennedy bill. He has led the fight for a long time. I am glad Cruz is picking up on the issue. He participated in last years DC March for Jobs along with Sessions, King, Mo Brooks, Alan West, and others. In fact Steve King marched in the front of the parade on a very hot day with about 4,000 of us, including many blacks.
I like and respect Ted Cruz, but I can't let you get away with the allegation that Sessions is just the front man. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Maybe we should go over to the Birmingham News and give Mr Sessions some kudos..what do you think?
Indeed he does!
Second!
Sorry, I would need to hear Ted Cruz’s opinion on that House bill (yes, I know Cruz is in the Senate).
I really don’t trust anyone in the House
Keep it up, Kabar, and thank you! You have also been our champion on this issue here at Free Republic!
Once again Jeff Sessions stands in the breach.
It’s not a competition guys. Who CARES who was first..we need them all,,,ALL to fight against King Obama’s agenda!
