San Antonio police mistake photographer for fleeing drug suspect, beat him silly
Washington Post ^ | July 29, 2014 | Radley Balko

Ah, another glorious moment in America’s drug war.

Three San Antonio Police officers are being investigated for possibly using excessive force, after a May 20 incident in west San Antonio left a man with injuries to his face, skull and neck.

Roger Carlos was in the 10600 block of Westover Hills Boulevard taking photos of a building that will soon be home to his wife’s medical practice, when he was approached by three officers around 2:30 p.m.

The officers were identified as an undercover drug task force officer and two SAPD SWAT members.

According to an SAPD incident report released to I-Team, the officers had been pursuing a suspect nearby who was wanted on a felony warrant.

-SNIP--

“All three of them started beating me on the head,” said Carlos, who still showed visible signs of the beating when he spoke with KENS 5 weeks after the incident.

“It was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me.”

Carlos said he was struck about 50 times, even though he complied with the officers’ instructions and did not fight back.

Shortly after being handcuffed and explaining to officers that he owned the property, a fourth officer approached and said the suspect was in custody nearby.

--SNIP--

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says it was a case of “mistaken identity,” ... “From the report that I’ve read, from the photo that I saw and from your description, I’ve not seen anything at this point that would indicate to me that anything out of order happened.”

The money Roger Carlos wins from the department should be taken from the police pension fund. Why should the taxpayer foot the bill. Until police feel the pain their actions cause, they will continue to inflict pain on the taxpayers.
********************************
I really like that idea! Same should apply to all public employees pension funds, as well as a politician’s individual pension account.

Operating a camera while being latino?

The vast majority of San Antonio is of Mexican heritage, so it’s likely that the cops are also.

SAPD has a border invasion to deal with, they’re not getting a whole lot of recognition for that
*****************************************
San Antonio is over 200 miles N of McAllen, where the vast majority of illegals have been crossing the border for the past year or so. .........SA’s communist, La Raza Mayor, Julian Castro was pro-invaders. Now, Obama has moved him to be a Secty. of HUD.

The long-term citizens of SA who are LEGAL multi-generation Texans of Mexican descent are opposed to amnesty for the illegals.

Also, in the list are several items of muzz humiliation. The siege of Malta, the battle of Zenta, the expulsion from Spain, and the defeat at the gates of Vienna all happened on Sept 11.

They carry grudges, you know. (hmmmmm)

Taking pictures or video of facilities, buildings or infrastructure in a manner that would arouse suspicion in a reasonable person.

It is exactly that idea that I was commenting on. Contrary to the opinion of many who would have us live in a police state, photography is not a crime. Nor is it probable cause for a Terry stop.

I remember hearing horror stories growing up about people travelling in the Soviet Union being harrassed or arrested for the "crime" of photography. We were told that this is what happens in totalitarian countries. The state has become so powerful and paranoid that it is afraid of mere photography.

Sadly there are many in this country who would support such a law here. Fortunately it hasn't passed yet, because if it did I'd have to add it to my "commit at least one felony a day" habit.

Yes the paranoid state of looking at the actions of even a would be terrorist as most allowable lest we live under the poet of the city police are more apparent here than ever.

That I am not suggesting that doesn’t matter at all

Here’s the scenario that should have occurred and if it did the police had better be in trouble over it and SAPD is not known as militant and they do indeed have drug cartel activity do deal with I will not argue about that- they had a gang mess in the early 90s and cleaned it up

This guy should have, like anyone even prior to 9 11, gone to the manager the security or any receptionist and told them what he was doing and that’s not even with a property deed or lease, which would have helped. If that’s what did happen it better be major trouble for the Leo

Look at a map. This is the entrance to a major international resort

No one here claims to remember post 9 11 vigilance of civilians to look for suspicious activity. But likely someone in the building asked the cops to check out (not to be confused with beat up) the random guy taking pictures of the building

We don’t know for a fact that he didn’t get very weird when the cops got there, maybe he didn’t, or for a fact that he has a lease

This, in the much and widely, here, denied vacinity of the border from which much gang and cartel activity is reported

Maybe the cops were driving by and saw him asked him what the deal was and he got weird, maybe he was a fine gentleman and they wanted to jump him anyway that’s feasible

If he had said, ‘hey I checked with the manager, I have a lease here, on this private property and am taking photos for advertising’ which is what seems so fascist to people here but just polite to only me, and then the cops jumped him Then no.

But on this forum, where the theme is to not trust the media, this journalist out to sell books on his ‘police state is taking away your freedoms’ book, which is likely based on facts, there is no questioning of the story. It just turns into an abuse fest

And it is very disconcerting to find such lack of curiosity. So I am out

Paragraphs are our friends.
By the way, speaking of friends, I have one who takes photos of buildings every day, all day long. Its his business, and the Chamber of Commerce pays him for the photos.

Not to be rude, but you really don’t know what you’re talking about. Taking photos of buildings isn’t a terrorist activity, and never has been.

Well, I know paragraphs are our friends.

It was a mistake

And you obviously didn’t read it so we are wasting time again

Nor did you ready posts, but here, on this forum there are unwritten rules. One is that when insulting cops all written rules are off. Personal attacks are allowed

And the insulter is allowed to say anything at all regardless of what the true position of the insultee is. Reading his statements is not required

You didn’t read my statement at all so, YOU don’t know what you are talking about

For the record, in case anyone else is still reading this thread, and if they are I’d like to say, step away, it’s been three days

I NEVER said taking pictures of buildings is illegal. No one ever said it

Read the blip from the homeland security piece I put in or google is taking photos of a building suspicious behavior?

Then, ASK your friend. Better, show him my statements but all and in context, and ask his input but inquisitively, not in the liberal modes leading way, like ‘we are going to have a fight if you answer this honestly’

Or just ask him if he checks in with a building receptionist or so.

If these cops attacked him for acting suspiciously then the investigation better bear that out and they go to jail or we are all under threat of bad cops

What is the theory here, that these guys wander around looking for someone to beat up?

Like people on this forum mobbing up and personally attacking someone who dares a question. I can relate to the guy in the photo

Lay off I never said it was a crime

I just said we don’t know the story. That, though, IS a crime on this forum- wondering why people don’t find out the story

“What is the theory here, that these guys wander around looking for someone to beat up?”

-the police chief said it was a case of mistaken identity. They were looking for a Hispanic suspect, so I guess all Hispanics look alike to these clowns.

-No, he doesn’t. It’s not required by any law.

The commies used to be nice enough to put signs on buildings you shouldn’t take a picture of. Perhaps your buddy mcmAnus should do the same. Or better yet find a commie country to move to with his defenders like you.

You a gubment provocateur? The man OWNED the building that was under construction! Photography is not a crime. Although everything is becoming a crime because the people demand it.

Are you a paid gubment poster?

No II am not a government whatever. If you can find where I said or implied that it is illegal to photograph buildings you’d be making it up

You are just piling on

Ian being skeptical of journalists.

These cops probably saw this guy and piled on like what is going on here to me. But that’s ok because it’s just anonymous words right?

But we don’t know yet anymore than they are alleged to have known

We don’t know if he owned the building

What he said was that his wife was leasing a space

I said throughout this thread the cops need to be in jail if what the journalist reports is true

But that doesn’t matter

You are instantly defending the actions of an oppressive government. The photography angle had nothing to do with what happened. Yet you devoted a lot of words to that angle. Expect to be flamed.

Wrong.

The story is not about photography.

Lets get this straight. I am running from cops and stop to take pictures of a building? How is that probable?

Yet the cops gang tackled and beat the crashes out of a guy photographing a building? how does that make sense?

Here’s the question related to the accusation:

What exact words did I use to defend the government?

Answer that before going on to the next, other wise I’m chasing your illogical accusations all day without getting a thing from you.

I realize you can get away with that here on the mob pile on, but, just explain your first false accusation
