A gunman opened fire inside Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Delaware County on Thursday afternoon, killing a female caseworker and grazing a psychiatrist in the head, police said.
Officials believe the doctor then drew his own weapon and shot the assailant, hitting him three times and critically injuring him, said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan.
The psychiatrist , 52, is expected to recover.
Donald Molineux, chief of the nearby Yeadon Police Department, said the doctor "without a doubt saved lives" by firing back.

So, if the hospital is a posted “Gun Free Zone what will happen to the doctor?
All right! A shrink with sense - probably recognizes a crazed killer when he sees one.
Well, yeah. To do that you'd have to be nuts.
I know several ER Docs who carry on the job and they don't give a rip about the rules.
“There’s a sign on the door that says you have to check your weapons at the front,” she said, “But you can’t expect every crazy person to do that.”

It’s stupid for doctors not to be armed especially if they’re psychiatrists. Less than cured patients, shall we say, tend to focus on them and come after them.

The psychiatrist is going to have to have his head examined. The finding will be that he was smart to have a defensive firearm readily available. He no doubt saved some lives, including his own.
Looks like The Hippocratic Oath has it’s limitations! The Good deed for the day there Doc!
If not for the caseworker, this would be an all around “happy ending”.
Let’s not mince words, this would have been a massacre were it not for the doctor who was packing.
This is the hospital I was born at and my father died at, so the story was of great interest to me.
I just want to know what caliber and what brand of tool he used.
In before the “The doctor needs more time at the range” or “The doctor needs a higher-caliber gun” posts.
Born there too in 1940. Calm peaceful Landsdowne /Yeado suburb then. Not so much now.
Gun-banners are gonna hate this story.

Wow!
An armed and proficient shrink!
Who’da thunk?
GOOD FOR HIM!!!!!!!!!!
He lives to psychoanalyze another day.
In before the “No one with a gun ever stopped someone with a gun” crowd. Oops wrong site.
