The head of the IRS confirmed Wednesday that investigators looking into missing emails from ex-agency official Lois Lerner have found and are reviewing "backup tapes" -- despite earlier IRS claims that the tapes had been recycled.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, testifying before a House oversight subcommittee, stressed that he does not know "how they found them" or "whether there's anything on them or not." But he said the inspector general's office advised him the investigators are reviewing tapes to see if they contain any "recoverable" material.
The revelation is significant because the IRS claimed, when the agency first told Congress about the missing emails, that backup tapes "no longer exist because they have been recycled."

Re-runs of I Love Lucy? If not they will disappear.
How many times do you think Koskinen got his lunch money beaten out of him in grade school?
I am guessing plenty
They’re running the House around the mulberry bush. The really damaging stuff was probably in the IM system and someone should be held responsible for that being used as it violates the record keeping laws.
Either they have backups or they do not. Probably they are screening the tapes to see if they are incriminating.....
The tapes will have an 18 minute gap
This is why the French resorted to the guillotine.
And with that Statement alone, CONGRESS should have CHARGED him with Inherent Contempt and LOCKED HIS ASS UP until the End of this Congressional Term. But they are just as complicit because they too would like to use the IRS this way if they get back in the Whitehouse. Bunch of CORRUPT WUSSES.
We all know they’ll provide nothing. They are just playing games.
"Backup tapes," by definition, contain recoverable material. Otherwise the tapes aren't really "backup."
> he does not know “how they found them”
When he thought they made sure all the copies had been trashed...
I am guessing plenty
Looks like he still is!
“Either they have backups or they do not. Probably they are screening the tapes to see if they are incriminating..... “
In the days of letters and paper memos the company I worked for sent around a memo about a lawsuit. They wanted us to report whether we had certain correspondence. I kept a file of everything I’d received by date. I called as I had exactly what they were looking for. An attorney hustled to my cube and reviewed it. He took the whole file. I said, “Wait, I need copies of that.” He looked at me like I was crazy and said no. Did any of that material make it to the other side’s discovery? I’d bet not or he’d have let me copy it. They didn’t want it discovered so they made certain it wouldn’t be. That’s what’s going on here. Now, on the good side, it wasn’t Watergate that nailed Nixon, it was the cover-up. There are WAY too many people involved in this one to keep it secret forever. But along the way, look for people to start killing themselves while cleaning their guns.
The tapes will be found not to contain any emails but they will contain an early studio recording of the Beatles from 1962. Oddly, Lois Lerner’s voice can be heard faintly in the background repeating “I am the walrus”.
“as it violates the record keeping laws”
“Law” implies a penalty for doing something wrong.
Which we should all realize, by now, doesn’t apply to elected Democrats and their cronies.
Or using the time to "develop" some of the emails from the tapes, which will miraculously exonerate Lerner and the IRS from any and all wrong doing. Watch.
In the meantime....all the lost blah blah blah stories gave them the needed time for the "cleansing".
You don’t suppose they might have been “sanitized” while they were “lost ...”
I have long felt that the e-mails are of far more value to these Republican hacks as “missing.” My theory is that as November approaches, more and more e-mails will be “found” and nothing of value will be found, either due to erasure or reality. If the Republicans have anything, they are likewise holding out until November gets closer. It’s all theater.
