Amid allegations that Russian-backed separatists are actively impeding the investigation into Thursday's downing of a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine territory, the international community is expressing its anger.
Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, said that he wants justice and that justice needs to start with a "credible unimpeded independent investigation" of what happened.
"I'm very very disturbed by reports of the careless, even callous way in which the crash site has been treated," Baird said via a teleconference in the U.K., with reports suggesting that Russian rebels were removing bodies and evidence from the crash site and threatening international investigators.
"Let me spell out the obvious...this tragedy is a direct product of Russian military aggression and illegal occupation of Ukraine. President Putin's continued support for armed groups in Eastern Ukraine constitutes a threat to international peace and security.
"To borrow a phrase from the famous English writer, he has 'let slip the dogs of war.' And now he has to face up to the consequences."
Thursday's plane crash which the United States alleges was caused by a surface-to-air missile fired by Russian-backed separatists is just the latest vexation by Russia in Ukraine.
Throughout the ongoing conflict, Canada has been one of Russia's most vocal critics, of their annexation of Crimea and their provocations in Eastern Ukraine. The prime minister was quick to impose sanctions and travel bans against Russian officials and has consistently chided Putin's inaction towards peace in the region.
Baird says that the Canadian government will soon announce new sanctions "against a broad range of Russian people and entities."
Those sanctions will likely be in-line with the United States and the European Union.

Russia needs to pay for these murders.
Obviously nobody is in the mood to go to war, but there are other ways. Russians love their sports - cut them off completely.
Gator, you suggested taking away the 2018 World Cup - Excellent, but go even further. Ban them from FIFA, the Olympics, IIHF, every single sporting event. Cut them off totally.
That’ll get their attention. Until Russia starts behaving like a civilized country again, they don’t deserve any international respect.
I remember back to the TWA-800 investigation. It stuck out because it was run differently than any other US domestic investigation.
I only mention it, because here once again we see a deviation from the normal crash investigation, this time an international one.
Russia has it’s fingerprints all over this. It could demand the separatists allow free passage for international investigators. Instead it is taking possession of important articles of evidence.
This is a real stinker.
“Putin has let slip the dogs of war: Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird”
Ok, these people seriously need to STFU.
I frankly do not care how this happened. But as it has happened in the past, and been done by several nations, including our own, THIS is not a pretext for any talk of “war”.
These blow-dried twits in bureaucratic positions are not going to be on any front line, and sure as hell wont be near anyplace that might get nuked.
The lives of potential millions, and the disruption of billions, are not worth this plane.
Next time, you morons will make sure commercial airlines dont get routed over war zones.
Russia will destroy the evidence. USA has already confirmed that it was a Russian missile, but only USA has the satellite network capable for that kind of intelligence.
This could be re-confirmed by international experts examining the evidence on the ground and that is why Putin is destroying it.
I have a theory on why. When it comes to sanctions from the EU then there will be some political forces that work against it. For example German hippie-stalinist parties will work on people claiming that the USA is lying and there is no need for sanctions. They would get a lot less ears listening if the evidence could have been confirmed by respected German experts on the crash site.
There are some people who say that the shootdown
was the direct result of Kiev Air Traffic Controllers
re-directing MH-17 directly over the "war zone"This being done by the Kiev government to blame Putin.
Thoughts ?
Pretty tough talk. When does he plan to attack Russia?
Wait until the US OPEN and Maria starts hearing the chants “Shrapnelova —”.
Meh, I compare this to the beginning of WWII. Crimea is like Austria and Ukraine is like Poland. And Russia is Nazi Germany.
I’ve commented that I feel like we are in august of 1939 and September 1st is a comin’. Well, September 1st came and went.
Enjoy the next decade.
Where did you get the notion that only the USA has satellite capability over eastern Ukraine?
If we don't at least let aggressors know that we saw what they did, and don't approve -- then there's every reason to expect more of the same bad behaviour. I thought that was self-evident, amongst FReepers.
Furthermore, there's a big difference between pointing out an obvious act of war, and actually declaring war. Baird did the former -- he did not do the latter. According to the article: "Baird says that the Canadian government will soon announce new sanctions "against a broad range of Russian people and entities."
Those sanctions will likely be in-line with the United States and the European Union."
Maybe that was hasty of me. I figure Russians have it also, but they don't count for obvious reasons.
Do you know if there is anyone else with such capabilities?
Yeah, Putin, watch out, John Baird is coming after you, it will be some nasty bear on bear action.
(you must be a Canuck to get this one)
Lemme see now, - - - I listened to Obamas Flexible Speech to Putin today, just before he takes up his real day job of bilking money from Democrat Oligarchs, all expenses paid with US Taxpayer Dollars, of course.
As far as i can tell, Putin is following Obamas flexible playbook exactly:
* Do what ever you want.
* Have no fear of being held accountable.
* Disobey any and all laws, or ethical standards.
* Cover up any evidence.
* Lie, at every opportunity, especially to the gullible Media.
* Deny.
* Blame others.
* Ridicule all who oppose you.
* Ignore all critics.
* Silently, but ALWAYS arrogantly, consider any harm done to others as necessary collateral damage.
Thus, by listening to Obamas speech to Putin, I found Obamas and Putins methods to be on the same page:
* Keep investigators away from the evidence;
* Do not allow investigators to investigate;
* Isolate your Party from the International Community.
* Continue to do whatever you want.
BTW, if Obama has three Day Jobs:
1.) Bilking money from Democrat Oligarchs,;
2.) Doing Completed Staff Work in the Oval Office,
and 3.) Playing the role of the cool Choom-Guy,
at which job does B. Hussein invest more hours?
Tax-burdened taxpayers want to know - - - !
“So, you would recommend just ignoring the incident altogether? Please educate us as to when shooting down a civilian airliner, going about peaceful business, is not an act of war.”
No. But you want a potential world war over this? As disgusting as this incident is, the idea that a civilian airliner was flying over a known warzone is more disgusting. What the hell was the air traffic controllers doing sanctioning this to happen? And from some of what I read, it was known to pilots to avoid this airspace, but this one just went on through?
I want to see a real investigation, not a bunch of pompous windbags tossing around checks that their butts cant cash. Loose words can let lose wars.
They wouldn’t mind a war as long as it is US troops doin’ all the dying.
Crazy, However they are more than welcome to quit talking about it and go fight Putin by theirownselves.
LOL! I think Canada will boycott the next Goodwill Games.
Bam! Right on target.
“No. But you want a potential world war over this? “
No, I don’t. And neither does Baird. You keep building straw men, and dragging red herrings around.
If this incident doesn’t merit a response (even one that’s really just a couple of notches above a “strongly-worded letter”), then where would you draw the line? What would it take before you would want to call Putin on it?
“If this incident doesnt merit a response (even one thats really just a couple of notches above a strongly-worded letter), then where would you draw the line? What would it take before you would want to call Putin on it?”
You tell me what you want to happen. What is this vaulted “response”?
Strongly-worded letter isnt good enough? Ok, then what do you do beyond saber-rattling rhetoric that some of these people in government are doing over something we arent even 100% sure as to how it happened?
Because this isnt some little dirt country in Africa or the middle east, and you had better be prepared for escalation that makes this more than just some news story you follow on the internet that you can take a break from when you are bored.
And hiding behind terms like straw men red herrings isnt making anything I’m saying any less true.
