Yup, heard the hummer a little bit ago, he buzzed me as I was getting up to come in the house. He will not stop at the feeder any longer, must be ticked off. LOL

Brahms: “Liebeslieder Waltzes” for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Piano 4-Hands, Op. 52

Jo Brahms had been studying the music of Schubert ever since Robert Schumann had pulled the pieces out of Schubert’s trunk decades after his death and published them. It was the various German dances that Schubert had improvised at parties and written down later that inspired Jo to set the poetry of George Daumer to music for vocal quartet and piano 4-hands. Jo and Clara Schumann played the piano at the premiere in 1870, when Jo was 37 and Clara 51. By then, Jo had transferred his love for Clara to one of her daughters – who had no idea that Brahms wanted to be more than Uncle Jo to her.

These are 18 short waltzes. Regrettably, I can’t find videos with English translations of the German for all waltzes, just for a few.

Brahms: “Liebeslieder Waltz”, Op. 52/6, ”Ein kleiner, hübscher Vogel”

Op. 52/7, ”Wohl schön bewandt war es”

Op. 52/8, ”Wenn so lind dein Augen mir”

Op. 52/9, ”Am Donaustrande”

Op. 52/10, ”O wie sanft”

Op. 52/12, ”Schlosser, auf und mache Schlösser”

Op. 52/15, ”Nachtigall, sie singt so schön”

Schubert: Adagio and Rondo concertante for Piano and Strings, D. 487

In his early compositional years, Schubert had more luck imitating Haydn and Mozart than he did Beethoven. This a Mozart imitation, and Frannie almost gets it right. It’s fun, not deep, and typical for Schubert in his late teens.

I am “babysitting” a lovely 9 year old and her extremely overly affectionate 100 pound dog.

I love the dog, but the average babysitter is deathly afraid of him.

So I get the job! LOL!

Brahms: 2 Songs for Alto, Viola & Piano, Op. 91

These are two late masterpieces with the unusual accompaniment of viola and piano. The second of these songs is an annual Publius post for Christmas. Both are heartbreakers. The poet for the first song is Rückert, and the second is Geibel.

Brahms: “Gestillte Sehnsucht”, Op. 91/1

Brahms: “Geistliches Wiegenlied”, Op. 91/2

Good afternoon Meg and hope you had a great Saturday. I just got home from a 90th birthday party for a WWII vet (my cousin’s dad). Several of his VFW buddies were there as well. Still doing great for their age.

"O Wert Thou In The Cauld Blast"
Robert Burns
Sung by Jean Redpath
(Click)

O wert thou in the cauld blast,
On yonder lea, on yonder lea,
My plaidie to the angry airt,
I'd shelter thee, I'd shelter thee;
Or did Misfortune's bitter storms
Around thee blaw, around thee blaw,
Thy bield should be my bosom,
To share it a', to share it a'.

Or were I in the wildest waste,
Sae bleak and bare, sae bleak and bare,
The desert were a Paradise,
If thou wert there, if thou wert there;
Or were I Monarch o' the globe,
Wi' thee to reign, wi' thee to reign,
The brightest jewel in my Crown
Wad be my Queen, wad be my Queen.

Please let me know by FReepmail if you would like
to be admitted to or released from my music pinglist.

One of my favorites since I first heard it several decades ago. I much prefer this setting to ohers I have heard.

Mendelssohn: Trio for Violin, Cello & Piano in C minor, Op. 66

This is late Mendelssohn, which tends to be uneven in quality. It’s quite different from his earlier trio we heard the first week of the festival.

For the first movement, remember your lessons on sonata format! It’s marked “allegro energico e con fuoco”, translated as “quickly, energetically and with fire”. That second subject in E-flat is glorious.

Mendelssohn: Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 66, first movement

The second movement is marked “andante espressivo”, which has nothing whatsoever to do with coffee. It means “a walking pace and expressive”. It’s in E-flat and 3/4 time.

second movement

The scherzo is marked “molto allegro quasi presto”, which means “very quickly, and pedal to the metal on the curves”. These three ladies give a great performance. And what an ending!

third movement

The finale is marked “allegro appassionato”, which needs no translation. Stefan Jackiw, who performs in this video, will be performing this piece at the Festival.

fourth movement

It was wonderful.

The Ralph Vaughan Williams setting of A. E. Housman was quite good, and the tenor, who was Vietnamese-American, gave a splendid performance. I'd like to hear him try some of Benjamin Britten's works for tenor.

The Ravel sonata, which I've heard many times, got a top-notch performance with all the humor intact.

The Shostakovich vocal piece was hard on the ears, but the soprano, who is Chinese, gave it everything she had.

The pre-concert recital was a short piano piece by Schumann along with five of his songs, sung by the Chinese lady. She has a way with German lieder that makes me think she has a major career ahead of her.

All in all, a great evening.
