New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blamed the Obama administration for the influx of immigrant children at the southern border, but didn't rule out the prospect of accepting children in New Jersey on a case-by-case basis.
"I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that," Christie told reporters in Marion, Iowa, where he campaigned for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad.
"I don't think ... it matters one bit what your Hispanic population is, as to whether or not you're going to offer help and assistance," he continued. "So we'll take every request that comes based on its merits and make those decisions."
He stressed that he doesn't want to "participate in encouraging this," but added "we are an empathetic people in this country and we don't like seeing people suffer."
Christie's comments represent a departure from some governors, who have turned down requests from officials to house immigrants during the crisis. Thousands of children from Central America, many unaccompanied, have streamed across the U.S. border with Mexico this year in what the administration calls an unexpected surge.
All sides agree that its become a humanitarian crisis with the federal government struggling to manage the influx. President Barack Obamas $3.7 billion emergency funding proposal to address the situation has been received coolly in Congress.
Christie, a potential White House contender, further fueled speculation about his 2016 ambitions with is visit to Iowa. There, he blasted the federal government for refusing to deal with immigration reform "in any meaningful way."
While in the Hawkeye State, which holds the first nominating contest in presidential election years, Christie brushed off new poll numbers that indicate about a third of Iowans hold a negative opinion of him.

Cuomo - meh. Not particularly attractive, IMO, and too Type A (NY breeds these types) and serious. The heavy accent does not help him with southerners and fly by country.

LOOK>..I pray for all possible Presidential candidates who may run on the GOP tickets...I try to keep up with things that would cause them to be a liability and not an asset. When I saw he was dieting...I prayed, as did others. He is not only one I am watching. Anything not to get Hillary as President or Mitt Romney. I want to get Reid out of that position in the Senate. I want to see improvement.
I believe you get what you say, so I try to put positive words over people, unless like Obama it’s hard to find anything positive....but I try. My spirit keeps reminding me not to hate, when I see some of the atrocities...so I pray.
I like Scott Walker much better than Christie, Christie did get himself a impressive re-election I gave him credit for, but his doing it by joining libs on so much stuff, and now playing conservative looking to 2016, is a bad indicator.
But naturally Dems have their sights on Walker trumping up phony accusations to hurt him in November, isnt making me happy. They hate him for beating them on so much stuff and want to take him out
I really like Scott Walker, however he has kept a low profile, which would require a huge upswing in campaigning to get elected.
I looked up Christie views on gay marriage, he’s ok with a civil union but marriage is a woman and man only. He does think gays are born that way, but that’s a genuine belief not a promoter of gay rights.
I looked up his stance on immigration and he believes in our old way of welcoming people into America, and the 1000 immigrants he said NJ could take seems like a small amount compared to the Feds push. Yes, I wish he wasn’t in favor of illegals....he is a politician walking a thin line.
He does not like us involved in UN>>>due to sovereignty issues, that tells me he is NOT NWO...
He believes in parochial schools and vouchers for private education, that’s a positive.
He believes in low spending and getting finances under control.
He did reprimand people under him over the Bridge scandal and fired a couple...that was on the list.
He has a high rating with the Governors.
Right now the immigration issue hurts those who are compassionate, mostly due to being under pressure to not be racist. NJ is a very multicultural state and he is playing to that... unsure of how he really feels although sure he is willing to help out. The list not too clear.
Look we all like Walker and having that kind of candidate would be wonderful, but we will get a compromise to pacify the more left of the GOP...that’s obvious. But if we do not stick together and get a Republican vote to make changes and overturn idiot laws....we are toast in America.
Would these people really want to be overtaken due to not voting?
I see that as a positive thing.
Walker is and will be seen as a DC outsider, and is now under the national radar screen.
I have GOPe friends here in Maryland who like Christie but I just don't see it.
Its going to be hard for him to run against the deficit in a GOP primary after his cameos with Obama for demanding that the House GOP send his state $$$, to get him re-elected.
Walker did the opposite, he cut spending and turned down Obamacare, one hell of a brave move/.
Christie's negatives are high now anyway.
The marxists are going after Walker hard, again. I think they would fear his candidacy.
He’d probably be my first choice.
Cristy Creme is just an awful choice. Who even likes him, he’s as much a jerk as McCain with less charm.
How would Walker get on the ticket?
I think we had best all keep an open mind this time around, as we saw how that worked out the last election for the Senate.
We all want more conservatism, so I guess it’s really a question of whether we want a 2016 election or not.
We can only pray that they don't successfully destroy him.
My tribute video to him at the link was made February 2011 was before his recall in the middle of his fight with libs.
A Liberal Teacher explains Union Busting (Scott Walker Tribute) (February 2011 )
What kind of question is that? How does anyone? By entering the race and winning the most primaries.
Walker/West, or Walker/Cruz.
I’m good with either.
Christie is a dead end. He’s a gun controller, and every gunny in the country knows it.
Want to lose 7 million NRA votes? Run Christie.
Cruz in the pole position (I’d not mind Cruz/LePage).
Realistically, I think I’d rather see Walker in top slot - he’s got Executive experience because he’s a Governor; Cruz would get seasoned as the VP and be ready for the NEXT go around.
I think Governors do better than Senators in the POTUS slot.
Just my two cents...
Ordinarily, I might say the same, but DC is a different place than a state capital, and we need someone who has become quite familiar and disdainful of the corrupt cesspool, hence Cruz at the top.
Think of it like the 1920 ticket. OH Senator in the #1 slot (Harding), MA Governor in #2 (Coolidge). They both did a helluva job. Harding resolved the Wilsonian recession in record time by cutting taxes and government. Reviled by leftist historians, he is actually one of our best Presidents in my personal estimation. Cruz could follow that model.
Like Walker we need to get LePage reelected, over that swish Michaud.
He’s the Governor of one of THE most egregious gun rights violator states. He’s already SAID he would support an “assault” rifle ban.
He’ll sign a couple of “pro-gun” bills, or veto an “anti-gun” bill here and there to make it look good because he wants to be president, and he KNOWS he won’t get the gun owner vote.
2/3s of the people in this Country own guns. If HALF of that tells him to go pound sand - that’s a WHOLE lot of votes.
If he was REALLY a Conservative and pro-Constitution, he’d be doing everything in his Executive power to see to it that New Jersey gun owners weren’t treated like third-class citizens merely for wanting to exercise THE most basic Constitutional, Civil and HUMAN Right - that of self-defense.
43 States have carry; New Jersey isn’t one of them, and last time I checked they ratified the US Constitution along with all of the other states.
I take people at their word. If he says he supports banning certain guns (just because they look “scary” to soccer moms) then he means it and will do so.
If they force Christie on us, I will write in another candidate. It’s my vote, and I won’t give it to someone who disrespects my rights...
It’s not open for negotiation.
You might be right... but we’re a LONG way away from the 20s, my brother...
That is the “dirty little secret”. They hide them because many are whole families and older people. All we get to see are the kids to tug at heartstrings.
Nothing like importing voters.
No matter what, the democrats care for no lives except their own power and money.
