I don’t think it’s inconsistent to feel sympathy for the robber’s family, sorrow for the wasted life, and approval for the store owner’s legitimate, self defense actions. I don’t see the family justifying the robber’s actions so much as grieving over the loss. Sure. They think he was a good kid who simply fell into the wrong crowd. They don’t know, but he might have even been the instigator/leader. What they claim about not knowing and/or being responsible for everything teenagers choose to do once they leave home strikes me as being realistic, too.

Good post and I agree. I have a nephew in law who committed murder and I still felt empathy for his dad.
I completely see them justifying his actions
