The official vote for confirmation was 71-26 with three abstentions. The Republican abstention came from Sen. David Vitter (R-LA).
Cornyn did not just vote yes for Castro--he helped guide the nomination through the Senate. He made an introductory speech for Castro before the nomination hearing last month. Many Texans are reassured by Mayor Castros example that the American dream is still very much alive, Cornyn said according to a post in the Dallas Morning News.
President Barrack Obama apparently agreed with Sen. Cornyn. In a statement quoted in an article by Jon Prior on Politico.com, President Obama said, Julián has lived the American dream in his own life, and Im confident he will help Americans across our country seize their own piece of that dream for themselves and their children.
Sen. Cruz, on the other hand, held his cards much closer to the vest in regards to the Castro nomination. Cruz told Breitbart Texas, "I respect Mayor Castro but share the concerns my colleagues voiced in his nomination hearing. Specifically, questions regarding the use of eminent domain by local municipalities, FHA loans, and the federal enforcement of local zoning and housing laws were not sufficiently answered. We need a HUD Secretary who will help wind down our governments heavy hand in housing, not simply further the President's regulatory agenda. Despite our differences in policy, I am committed to working in good faith with the mayor in his new role and wish him all the best."
Senator Cruz went on to vote no after evaluating the merits of the nomination.

“Julian La Raza Castro is an anti-white racist...”
This must be the guy who is supposed to be president Warren’s vice-president.
Once again we end up with a net zero for Senators from Texas - same thing when we had Cornyn and Kay Bailey. One voted no and one voted yes. And to think we have six more years of Cornyn krap. Quite obvious why we don’t hear anything about shutting down the border from him.
I voted against the SOB Cornyn in the primary. Next time I will vote for the demonazi in the general.
Very frustrating! And to think that compared to Kay, he WAS the conservative! Yeesh!
Yes but I wish it was happening faster.
Cornhole needs to retire. Sorry, but he is not my senator anymore.
This is proof that there's no difference in voting for the Dim over the GOPe RINO.
Cornrow, the DemocRat.
With this immigration mess, I don’t see a lot of people wanting to vote for Hispanic for President. There are still more of us.
El futuro Maximo Lider Y President de los Estado Unidos Julian Castro.
Doesn’t seem so far fetched now that we had someone called Barak Hussein Obama. If someone had told me 20 years ago that we would have a president the likes of Obama, I would have laughed for a good 5 minutes.
Cornyn loves him. Disgusting.
And to think that compared to Kay, he WAS the conservative! Yeesh!”
Cornyn’s voting record over the years of their joint rule is very interesting. Once she announced she wasn’t going to run again, he suddenly took the Conservative position on issues and she the Liberal. That way when he came up for election, he could point to his wonderful record. The other side of the coin - she had turned into the liberal and so glad she’s leaving so we can elect someone who is Conservative to help poor John in his battle.
I would love to have been standing next to him, seen his expression and heard his comments when he was first told Cruz was elected instead of his liberal buddy Dewhurst. Too bad we couldn’t have found a good candidate to run against Cornyn this time around.
It is a shame we couldn’t have 2 conservatives in Texas! Cruz has knocked it out of the ball park! Even more than I anticipated!
...political comity there, Mr. Cornyn?
What was that Lenin line: “The RINOs” will sell us the rope with which we’ll hang them.
Cornhole - you are scum.
How has that ruling fared in court?
It IS disgusting.
Aside from the fact that he comes from a family dedicated to dismembering the United States, what's his qualification to run the single largest bureaucracy in the United States government?
As near as I can tell he's a man with about the experience of the average 5th tier liberal arts school poli sci major.
Which means he's qualified to apply to for a job as the night manager at 7-11.
His website shows his grinning face in front of an American flag. What's American about him? When his family was growing maize in the hills of Oaxaca 240 years ago my family was fighting at Kings Mountain with Col. Cleveland.
He hasn't even got Tejano roots. His family "moved to" (synonym for swam the river) San Antonio in 1920, which means they left Mexico just after the second Mexican Revolution.
Many of those people were told to go home at that point, or deported later during the Depression when patience ran thin with them continuing to camp out in Southwest Texas.
I fail to see anything particularly American about him or his mother. If we were to declare war on their real nation, we know which side they'd be on.
Is someone like that to be given a position of trust in the U.S. government?
Oh wait, there's this guy from um, Hawaii..er, Kenya...er, Indonesia...er, we don't know where.
Mr. Castro is Pro-Invasion. It's nauseating that a "Republican" like Cornball would promote him and that the other 16 Treason friendly Senators would go along with it.
