During a live Senate hearing this afternoon, Sen. Tom Harkin (D) said that while listening to the testimony about children crossing the border illegally, it sounds to him as though many are saying that the solution to the problem is to round them up and ship them back like cattle, a sentiment with which he strongly disagrees. He said that the children have the right to have their health and dignity protected with Health and Human Services under the law. The hearing was held to request 3.7 billion dollars in supplemental funds to help stem the tide of incoming children as well as to provide the ones who are already here with healthcare and legal representation. Republican commentary during the hearing on the border crisis focused on the question of whether the funding would be enough to help the situation at all, and the need to remove the children from the United States as soon as possible.
Harkin pointed out that HHS is short on funds and that the supplement being discussed will allow the agency to follow the law. The supplement, he said, is critical and that we cant turn our back on these kids because the United States should be dedicated to human rights. Were better than that, he said. Harkin went on to say that it is nonsense that, according to some in the room, the United States is being overrun beyond its capacity to handle the border crisis. He feels that the nation can solve the problem and protect the children by letting them apply for asylum via the law and through due process. The children, he said, deserve advocates who can inform them of their legal rights, and that when he hears round them up and ship them back like cattle from the administration, he strongly disagrees. 25 senators attended the border crisis Senate hearing.
These children are trying to escape basic human rights violations, Harkin said, and further, the border escapees represent the exact type of value system on which the United States was founded. Jeh Johnson from the Department of Homeland Security said that the children are coming across easily because there are many ways for them to get through, such as swimming across the border.
Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D) said that parents have to raise as much as $3,000 to send their children to the United States, and that fact alone proves the imminent danger the children face in their homelands. The violence is so bad that the violence of the journey is less you say were going to send them back. Send them back to what? she asked.
Mulkulski went on to say that the horrors of what happens to the children in their countries of origin is indescribable and that the United States must implement a strategy to deal with this humanitarian concern. She likened the border crisis to a war, saying that the children have been driven out of their homes by violent drug dealers. Attention to the root causes of this crisis has been sorely lacking, she said, and that needs to change before a proper solution can be found. The need is urgent she said, and seemed to agree with Harkin that saying round them up and ship them back like cattle is not an acceptable route to take. The Senate hearing on the border crisis will be suspended until next Thursday.
That’s why I am only talking about the kids — I saw some young punks among that crowd and that’s not who I am talking about.
But I don’t think that you are the type who wants these young boys and girls to get on top of a f’n train again, fall off, get raped, die from thirst just to get back to their home country? Don’t blame these little ones — blame the f’n politicians who made this disaster possible.
There must be a better way to ship’m back.
Sounds about right to me --
According to the Texas congressman I saw on the news yesterday he said that he saw 80% adults and teenagers when he managed to get into one of the detention centers.
I’m not buying the media hype and joining hands with Nancy Pelosi to sing we shall overcome. I’m done being tolerant after decades of this crap.
+1
I lost all respect for Harkin while watching him during the Clinton impeachment hearings and listening to the BS rhetoric dripping from his mouth.
Yes, so am I and I am probably more conservative than you are, but that’s beside the point.
I shudder when I think how some of these little ones got here (they may have been forced to board that f’n train) and I certainly do not want them to go thru hell again.
Let the politicians who are to blame for this crap ride that f’n train and I hope they all fall off.
And charge them for the ride! Literally take the clothes from their backs if they can't pay for it. We have got to send a message here people, loud and clear. The border is closed. bammy and his cohorts in crime have been sending the message the border is non-existent, come on in, free healthcare, free phones, free housing, free food, etc. Well it isn't free, we are broke and broken. Close the {expletive} border now!
Your little fantasy about forcing them to ride back home on top of trains is entirely your own fantasy.
Some of you are sounding like the height of the Katrina fantasy when people were screaming about cannibalism and bodies stacked like cord wood.
The “They’re just kids” narrative is BS.
Rawhide! I can recall that theme song to this day. Rollin, Rollin, Rollin, keep those Doggies going..
Eject them like invaders and push em back into the water.
Immediate deportation.
Cattle don’t have a choice. These teenagers know they are stealing opportunites from other youth.
At the rate we are going we are going to have chartered 747’s flying into Latin America with families from all over the third world to start the trek into the US.
The word is out internationally..get your feet dry in the US and you are home free with bene’s. We might as well start handing out instructions at our Embassies world wide..forget the visa..hop a flight to Ameirca and get in free! Instead of going on a Haj go to America! Everything is free in America!
You forgot the unspoken qualifier; Everything will be free in America UNTIL THEY RUN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY. At least that’s what Lady Margaret Thatcher used to say about Socialism; which is the Obama-Brand of being American.
So if American children started showing up at the Mexican border, would this idiotic US senator demand that Mexico house, feed, cloth and educate them ?
It’s how.they got here...
Well, they came here lile FERAL RATS.. Cattle would be a step up.
Black American from Gang-Besieged Baltimore: ‘Where Can I Get Asylum?’

As the White House plans to spend billions of taxpayer funds to take care of illegal immigrant children who are unlawfully entering the country, some black Americans who live in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods are wondering where they and their children can get refugee status and aid.
On Friday’s Laura Ingraham Show, Elaine, a black woman from Baltimore, expressed her outrage that President Barack Obama is putting the interests of illegal immigrant children above those of American citizens. Though the number of illegal immigrant children unlawfully entering the country has spiked since Obama unilaterally enacted his temporary amnesty program in 2012, the White House has said the primary cause of the border crisis is the rampant gang violence in Central America.
“I’m living a nightmare. My whole neighborhood is so violent. There’s so much crime,” she said. “I have gangs everywhere here in Baltimore! I can’t let my daughter ride her bicycle outside I can’t do anything, Laura! I’m trapped here.”
Elaine told Ingraham that she listens to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Obama and feels that “nobody is saying a word” while spending billions of dollars taking care of foreigners who are unlawfully in the country.
Hey, Senator Harkin, do we have the right to have OUR health and dignity protected? You’re supposed to represent the interests of Americans, not foreigners.
