NEW ORLEANS C. Ray Nagin, the former mayor of New Orleans who was convicted in February on corruption charges, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday in federal court in New Orleans.
Mr. Nagin was found guilty in February on 20 counts, most relating to kickbacks from contractors looking for city work. The sentence was imposed by Judge Ginger Berrigan of United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Mr. Nagin, a Democrat, was arrested in January 2013, nearly three years after he left office. He was charged with taking kickbacks in the form of cash, cross-country trips or help with the family-run granite countertop company; the bribes were handed out by men looking for city business ranging from software supplies to sidewalk repair. Many of the schemes, though not all, took place after Hurricane Katrina, when contractors crowded into the city for rebuilding work.
Many of those involved eventually pleaded guilty and testified at length against Mr. Nagin at his trial. Photo

Mr. Nagin had come into office in 2002 as a reformer from the business world and a foe of cronyism. But the city grew frustrated with his stewardship, particularly in his second term when the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina stalled and Mr. Nagin seemed unengaged. By the time he left office in 2010, many in New Orleans had moved past frustration and were simply ready to see him go.

He’s about to discover what a chocolate city is really like.
Heading for the Chocolate Pokey.
My guess is that it’s going to be a chocolate prison.
He got off easy. Kwame Kilpatrick got 40 years.
It’s a shame he’ll do his time at a federal country club facility rather than Angola.
"Stuck on stupid!!
Now they need to prosecute him for being complicit in the murders-by-cop of so many people after Katrina.
More like a ‘chocolate’ prison.
But remember, the aftermath of Katrina was Bush’s fault. The. President should have predicted the total collapse of the state and local juntas.
I think I’ve thought of a “GOOD” sentence for Ray”SchoolBus”?He has to drive”The SchoolBus”from Hell!!!Fill it with violent criminals,drug-traffickers,etc.!!!!!!!!
3rd paragraph from the Slimes. Article is probably on page A17.
Fact that they even printed it means everyone in management is probably on vacation.
Pardon in the mail and soon to replace Holder at DOInjustice.
He should be executed for condoning the taking (confiscation by police) of personal firearms of citizens during a complete disaster. To me that is a death penalty offense.
Now only if we could stuff Kanye West in there with him.
One of the biggest - and most hurtful - lies in American political history is that W did nothing. W begged Landieu and Blanco to let him in days before landfall to help but they refused out of politics and 1300+ Americans needlessly died.
Slow Karma, but I’ll take it.
Concur.
He left the blame for Katrina at Bush’s feet. He got what he deserved.
