A Gresham man fired on a group of people leaving a party, only to be shot himself by one of the victims, a military service member with a concealed carry permit, authorities said.

Nobody with a gun ever stopped a bad guy with a gun. There has to be an error in this reporting.
Why do I have the feeling that this being Illinois they will still try to charge him with something for defending himself?

Oh indeed. But having formerly lived in the Peoples Republic of Illinois where you have to have FOID card to own a gun anywhere in the state and concealed carry was verbotten.......
Just seeing any positive press especially in the Chicago Tribune is simply STUNNING.
They just started issuing permits less than a year ago.
Rumor has it that with the draw down in Afghanistan the military services are going to send their combat surgeons and medics to Chicago hospitals for training for gunshot wounds.
A friend of mine was an anesthesiologist for the Navy. It’s already common practice to take military interns/residents to big city hospitals for trauma and gunshot training. He did his training in DC and Baltimore, and trained others in LA.
