North Carolina’s voter identification law, which has been described as the most sweeping attack on African American electoral rights since the Jim Crow era, is being challenged in a legal hearing that opens on Monday.
Civil rights lawyers and activists are gathering in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for the start of the legal challenge that is expected to last all week. They will be seeking to persuade a federal district judge to impose a preliminary injunction against key aspects of HB 589, the voting law enacted by state Republicans last August.
Lawyers for the North Carolina branch of the NAACP and the civil rights group the Advancement Project will argue that the main pillars of the law should be temporarily halted ahead of a full trial next year. Otherwise, they say, tens of thousands of largely poor black voters could find themselves turned away at the polls at the midterm elections in November.
“This is the worst voter suppression law we have seen since the days of Jim Crow. It is a full-on assault on the voting rights of minorities,” said Reverend William Barber, president of the North Carolina state conference of the NAACP.
North Carolina was the first state to take advantage of the landmark US supreme court ruling last June that removed one of the most powerful provisions in the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In Shelby County v Holder, the supreme court struck down the so-called “pre-clearance requirement” that had for almost half a century acted as a stalwart against racial discrimination at the polls in largely Southern states.

strike down the whole law with the voter ID mandate. Instead, he will decide what, if
any, specific parts should be delayed until a final decision on the law is made in 2015.

The group wants a judge to temporarily reinstate same-day voter registration, the longer early
voting period that was trimmed from 17 days to 10 days, and allow 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register
to vote. They also want polling officials barred from asking voters whether they have valid
identification when they vote. The law otherwise directs poll-workers to ask voters if they have
an ID and if they don’t, provide them with information on how to get one before the 2016 election.

Worst voter suppression since Jim Crow? That’s it? That’s the best they can come up with? Man, the NAACP is really running out of arrows in its quiver. Can’t they at least invoke the Holocaust, Wounded Knee, the Goths in Rome, the Great Flood, something at least just a little less tiresome than poor old, hackneyed, worn-out, used up Jim Crow?

But why a Tuesday in November? The answer stems from the agrarian makeup of 19th-century America. In the 1800s, most citizens worked as farmers and lived far from their polling place. Since people often traveled at least a day to vote, lawmakers needed to allow a two-day window for Election Day. Weekends were impractical, since most people spent Sundays in church, and Wednesday was market day for farmers. With this in mind, Tuesday was selected as the first and most convenient day of the week to hold elections. Farm culture also explains why Election Day always falls in November. Spring and early summer elections were thought to interfere with the planting season, and late summer and early fall elections overlapped with the harvest. That left the late fall month of November—after the harvest was complete, but before the arrival of harsh winter weather—as the best choice. --Ask History
So it was no problem 170 years ago to spend a day traveling by horse to the city where you would vote, sleep in the back of your wagon, vote in the morning and spend the rest of the day traveling home by horse. --But today we can't be bothered to spend an hour getting a free government issued picture ID? Well, here they are:
• Photo ID. This is standard practice around the world. What's the problem?
• Same-day registration. Again, standard practice, countries around the world have voter rolls, including majority black countries.
• Early voting. As a matter of opinion, I oppose early voting. I don't know whether countries around the world allow multiple election days.
• Out-of-precinct ballots. Again, this has to be standard practice around the world. You vote where you are registered to vote, where you are listed on the voting rolls. If you aren't listed, you're not a registered voter.
• Elimination of pre-registration. Allowing non-eligible people to register to vote, just sound stupid to me and rife for corruption. Again, I'm not aware of "pre-registration" being used around the world.
These provisions are the face of evil today. Really?

White People don’t have to show ID at the Polls, who knew?
The 2014 Primary in Mississippi was the first Election that required Voter ID in that State.
Surprisingly, the requirement did not deter Thousands of Blacks from Voting for Thad.
My super duper Lib B-I-L who lives in MS was outraged by the Voter ID Law because those Evil Republicans don’t want Blacks to Vote. He was additionally outraged when I asked him which Party wrote and enforced the Jim Crow Laws.
I went and obtained a NC state picture ID. Took 6 minutes. Bus stop out front. Seoparate facility just for picture IDs. A lot of older people there. They have an extensive list of documents you can use as proof.
You need one to join the NAACP protests against voter ID that they hold at the NC Capitol. Truth, the flyers for the protests said bring ID. smh
