A hugely controversial Russian law banning curse words in films, theatre, the media and arts came into force on Tuesday, part of a Kremlin-backed drive to play up traditional values and root out swearing.

The legislation, wich was signed off by President Vladimir Putin in May, imposes hefty fines on offenders -- up to 2,500 rubles ($72) for individuals and up to 50,000 rubles ($1,460) for businesses.

Movies featuring obscenities will not be issued a distribution licence, while traders will now be obliged to warn consumers about swear words.

It’s almost funny. Today Russia is emerging as the moral nation while the US falls into the deepest pits of immorality, debauchery and corruption.

There was a day when we believed in this. Now...every four letter word is okay as long as it doesn’t modify the “N” word or some gay transvestite or whatever they are.

Well, after Russia prohibited political dissent, what did you expect it to do?

Has anyone asked Quentin Tarantino how he feels about this?

Not amazingly controversial, as much as it might seem that way to us today. Remember back when you couldn’t show toilets on TV? This is pretty mild.

A law like that in the US would shut down the American entertainment industry overnight.

Actually, if we wouldn’t watch the shows on tv or go the the movies...the market would turn around.

I really don’t want the government regulating anymore than it already does.

Not to mention the infringement of our first amendment rights.

Interesting argument to make on July 4th. Are you suggesting that we go back to being the colony of George III?

Can you friggin’ believe this crap? If people love Russia so much, they should move there. If government offices weren’t closed, I’d suggest they renounce their citizenship today.

Just go, then. Don’t mind the state-controlled media. Putin knows what’s best for you. Hope you’re Russian Orthodox. Good luck.

Indeed.

American culture has devolved down to the point of an open sewer, fit only for the morally depraved.

It’s a bizarre turnaround from everything we once were and once represented.
