The U.S. Army is moving forward to replace the Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol with a more powerful handgun that also meets the needs of the other services.
As the lead agent for small arms, the Army will hold an industry day July 29 to talk to gun makers about the joint, Modular Handgun System or MHS.
The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols with one that has greater accuracy, lethality, reliability and durability, according to Daryl Easlick, a project officer with the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia.
"It's a total system replacement -- new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything," Easlick said.

The grips are kind of weird, though.
I think the Sig 226 was the winner in the last set of pistol trials. If they are going to drop the 9x19 then .40S&W is probably the best choice to marry power and capacity. But we’ll see which company is most homosexual friendly.
Just curious here but what is the first described meaning of the word where you found its definition. Was it described as a verb, or a noun?
44 Mag +P would do the job, and the girls and FAGs could shoot 44 special in the same gun.
I don’t disagree. I just am leery of any kind of tactical rig, Kydex or otherwise that facilitates “quick draw.” To me it is AD/ND waiting to happen.
I have Miami Shoulder Holster rigs for my Glocks.
The little 22 revolver is Priceless!
Reminds me of the rail mount bayonet I have from KaBar.
The G22 is already being built in America, so that pistol would be a nice, quick fix. The recoil on the full-sized G22 is amazingly manageable.
I have an M&P .40 and a 1911.
I find the standard 1911 easier to shoot and reacquire the target.
Perhaps its the shitty trigger that the M&P has.
AND for recoil sensitive weenies, the G22 can be quickly converted to 9mm with a barrel change, basically.
Funny, I still have a few hundred rounds of 45ACP headstamped “WCC - 42” I’m still shooting....not one failure in the last 5 years out of a tin of 600+
Yup. Simple and reliable.
They want a more accurate pistol? The pistol is very accurate, even the cheap ones. The person using it is is the one who missed..
I was on the unit combat pistol team for years and we shot the M1911 at matches. We practiced several times a week and shot between 50 and 100 round each time.
I still use my 1911 when I go into the wild, just in case a feral hog gets too close. So far, I haven’t had to use it, but I want it if I a hog gets too close.
Half the FBI and cops can not shoot the 10mm for crap as it’s over powered. Most of them can’t shoot a 9mm very well. I shoot next to them every month and it’s so sad that I can not believe it. They all think I’m a old cop or Fed as this would account for the good marksmanship. I tell them I was trained a long time ago in a land far far away.
“It’s a total system replacement — new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything,”
Does this mean NEW to the military,
or NEW, not invented yet?
Oh Oh, we’re going to end up with some ‘green’ ammo, in a caliber unavailable outside the military, while the old familiar stuff, hard to get now, will get even more scarce.
No conspiracy here, folks.
“..I just am leery of any kind of tactical rig, Kydex or otherwise that facilitates quick draw....”
I hear you, friend.
My rigs are all Galco, and good old fashioned leather.
BTW, I actually like the Beretta M92 in 9MM. IMNVHO, it's the wimp NATO ammo issued by the military that could be the problem. Put some manly loads in the mag, and then we'll talk "lethality" ...whatever that is. Missed shots with the ole .45 (which I hear do happen) aren't very lethal, either.
“...I shoot next to them every month and its so sad that I can not believe it. ..”
At this particular point in time, that’s probably a really good thing...
Just sayin’...
Mine too. Plus some Bianchi....
You can’t beat the 1911 trigger.
The conical rounds are not too bad. Hardball, eh, just shoot them more.
