House Speaker John Boehner called on President Obama to send the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border to help push back a surge of illegal immigrants -- many of them children -- from Central America.
“Our country is facing a national security and humanitarian crisis along our southern border,” the Ohio Republican said in a letter Friday to the president. “Thousands of children and families are pouring across our borders, overwhelming our resources and endangering those most vulnerable to exploitation.”
Boehner said the National Guard is "uniquely qualified" to respond to such a crisis because it's "able to help deal with both the needs of these children and families as well as relieve the Border Patrol to focus on their primary duty of securing our border." Border Patrol agents could apprehend as many as 90,000 children traveling alone this year trying to illegally cross the Mexican border, more than three times the number of children apprehended in 2013, according to a draft internal Homeland Security memorandum reviewed by the Associated Press. The number could soar to 142,000 by 2015, the memo says.
Boehner blamed the problem on Obama administration immigration policies he said have given migrants false hope “that once they reach U.S. soil, they will be able to stay here indefinitely.”
“While we understand that many of these individuals are coming to this country to escape violence and hardship in their home country, the current climate along the border and our enforcement policies are only encouraging them to risk their lives and those of their children,” he said.
Boehner wants the administration to enter talks with the Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras governments to ensure that apprehended migrants are “promptly and efficiently” returned to their home countries.
He added the State Department should work with the countries "to design and execute an aggressive communications effort to fully articulate the dangers and struggles children and families will face if they attempt to migrate to the U.S."
The speaker blamed the Mexican government for exacerbating the problem, saying lax enforcement at Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala and Belize “have given a free pass to immigrants heading north.”
“It is time that we confront the crisis along the border head-on through immediate and aggressive action,” Boehner said. “We can no longer tolerate the conditions threatening these children, nor continue to accept the risks of a porous southern border.”
I think it would be a better idea to direct FEMA to put all these children in FEMA camps, where they are to be held until returned to their country of origin. Likewise, any other illegal aliens who have been detained by ICE.

Give law abiding citizens the power to protect their own. All legal CHL holders may be armed, all others in support roles.
Ordinary citizens are just as capable as any law enforcement officer. Besides, the deterrent to drug cartels is large gatherings of armed civilians.
In times of war, the Border Guard would fall under the Army like the Coast Guard falls under the Navy.
Not that the northern border (where terrorists come in) is particularly secure either, but in terms of the sheer and overwhelming numbers of people coming in, the southern needs immediate attention and action.
RE: unaccompanied 3-year-olds...see the Boehner letter posted above (THANKS, Ray76!). He's absolutely right about the safety of these children, aside from the other problems. We will never know how many unaccompanied 3-year-olds who attempted to get here never made it...
The last time they played this border game with the National Guard (Bush, 2006), the Guard was forbidden to do any enforcement actions.
All they did was repair Border Patrol vehicles, man TV/listening posts, and grade roads along the fence.
Because, like Obama, Bush was not serious about sealing the border.
Now Guardsman will be called away from their civilian jobs, which incurs significant costs to them, their families, and careers, to change diapers, inoculate illegal aliens, feed them, and clean up their messes.
They will again be forbidden to do any enforcement actions, unless it’s against some group like the Minutemen, who, of course, are the real problem.
Let these illegals come in. Give them whatever they want. The Democrats want them, and the Republican elites living in their illegal-alien-free gated neighborhoods are no better than Democrats.
Until these illegals get settled next door to the Pelosis, Boehners, Rubios, Obamas, Reids, Bushes, McCains, Roves, McCarthys, Ryans, etc., there will be no desire to stop the invasion that makes Democrats more powerful and Republican elites more rich.
If it was only little children who needed their diapers changed who were crossing into America, we could survive.
However, the mass of illegal immigrants entering our country is dominated by drug dealers, sex traffickers, criminals escaping the law throughout Central America, workers eager to take American jobs at low wages, and Islamic terrorists starting to develop 9/11-type armageddons to destroy our cities once their brothers in the Middle East finish destroying Baghdad and Tehran and desire new, more bloodthirsty adventures.
It seems mean not to take in orphan children — even Oliver Twist was housed and given gruel by evil villains in Dickensian London. So, of course, the Obama-supporting media is portraying our border invaders as mainly groups of orphans in order to condemn anti-immigrant Republicans as heartless and cruel.
Meanwhile, millions of adult illegal immigrants continue to invade our open borders and destroy American jobs, social services, and our already debt-ridden cities. By the time illegal ISIS jihadis cross into our country with their nuclear suitcases headed for New York, will there even be a New York left to destroy?

The Obama / Boehner / US chamber of Commerce, solution will be amnesty for anyone who can get here, open borders and obama phone with all who register to vote within two weeks of their arrival.
John has lost all credibility with me, especially on anything to do with immigration, amnesty or border protection.
Fire warning shots and if they respond with rocks, SHOOT THEM.

Once the border is sealed, he’ll squeal like a stuck pig until he gets amnesty in return.
“Hey, we sealed the border. The border is secure. Now lets give the Democrats am insurmountable majority for the remainder of the history of the U.S.”
