U.S. President Barack Obama has informed Congress he is deploying up to 275 troops to provide security at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.
The announcement on June 16 comes after Sunni-led militants from an Al-Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), seized large swaths of territory across northern Iraq in recent days and advanced toward Baghdad
Obama's announcement is in accordance with the U.S. War Powers Act a federal law that checks the U.S. presidents power to send troops into foreign military action without consent from Congress.
The law requires the president to inform Congress within 48 hours of sending troops into military action abroad.
It also forbids troops from remaining deployed longer than 60 days, plus an additional 30 day withdrawal period, without Congressional authorization or a formal declaration of war by Congress.

I hope there are plans to evacuate and/or reenforce these troops when they come under fire. If the terrorists have Stingers, they have other heavy weapons too. We don’t need another Benghazi!
These soldiers are not boots on the ground. Obama just said a few days ago that no soldiers would be sent. These are just security. If they happen to get fired upon and then return fire it would be work place violence not combat. Barrack Hussein Obama, the First African American President of the United States of America never says he will not do something and then does it anyway. Nor does he ever tell a lie.
And when they are pulled back to defend the helicopter landing pad, and the enemy pull out a few Stinger missiles ...
This makes no military sense whatever.
Hope these guys stay safe.
I have always had enormous respect for members of our military. Even more so since they have had to serve under an incompetent, community organizer for CiC.
This would be the time for the military to take a stand, and refuse to deploy.
Yes, but could Obama be taking another stab at emptying Gitmo?
275 hostages could go a long way...
I think the opposite - the military needs to take a stand by deploying whatever it takes to get our people out. We can’t abandon those who are already there - but need to find a way to protect them until all can safely be evacuated.
Sure, that he tells them about.
The Master of Disaster wants more Ameeican blood shed than at Benghazi. He, IMHO, is addicted to it..
“American”
Ok, good point. I was assuming that the private military contractors there, with only air assistance, could get our people out. You too suggest insubordination, that is, defying this president at this time, in order to do what is right. We should either go in with full force or not at all.
With the VA scandal and the Berghdal release, the President is clearly at war with the military, now would be a good time to take a stand, but yes, our people at the embassy should be kept from harm’s way, and for me, 250 soldiers doesn’t accomplish this.
I’m guessing that, this time, there will be at least 275 people “left behind” as bammy passes out candies celebrating their deaths.
This ought to be interesting.
275 troops against thousands of prehistoric savages armed with U.S. military weapons we left behind.
Before anything actually happens, I give my condolences to the parents, children and spouses of those who may perish in this political “sugar pill” Obama is giving the liberal media.
I hang my head down in total shame and embarrassment.
