I won’t take issue with your premise. But I would just like to point out that I know of no evidence that Barack Obama has really converted to Christianity either.

The reality is that Russia is an opponent, albeit not perhaps the sworn enemy they used to be. So yes, it is a shame people back Putin. But perhaps they don't back PUTIN as much as they like a few facets of him, and wish Obama had those traits.
Obama hates America, Putin loves Russia.
Obama wants all of our efforts to fail, Putin wants all of Russia's efforts to succeed.
Obama is a confirmed Islamic terrorist, Putin fights and hates Islamic terrorists.
Obama has caused all or most of our allies to question us, some to leave us, while Putin has gained allies.
Obama wants Communism, Putin wants a government-friendly Capitalism.
They also share some very negative traits: Obama and Putin want no free speech. Obama and Putin both maneuver to rule forever. Obama and Putin will gladly kill citizens to achieve nefarious goals.

The main flaw in (Pat) Buchanans argument is the lack of any real evidence that Russia has come to grips withand disavowedits Soviet past. To the contrary, Putin laments the passing of the USSR and has put the former KGB, now the FSB, in charge of the power centers in Russia. He celebrates Russian spying on America.
And he continues to rehabilitate Stalin.

As the pro-Russia propagandists do their work here, Finland, which probably knows the truth a little better, is so fearful of the monster that they will probably join NATO.
Putin is even making Sweden fearful enough that they are discussing it.

Rather than embrace Christianity, the evidence shows Russia has embraced the Russian Orthodox Church
I think this is the flaw in your logic.
If you exclude the orthodox [ and probably Catholics too with a mindset like this ] you are left concluding the only Christian country is the US and perhaps protestant Germany and some of scandanaiva. Maybe england if you are gracious enough to include anglicans as protestants.
But if you do that then you are left in the position that the protestant nations are now openly pro homosexual, which I doubt you support. To resolve that you then will need to declare evangelical Christianity as "true" Christianity to the exclusion of sizeable parts of protestantism. But if you do that you are left with no country on earth which you can legitimately call "Christian" with that definition.

Above all, we should acknowledge that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a major geopolitical disaster of the Century. As for the Russian nation, it became a genuine drama. Tens of millions of our co-citizens and compatriots found themselves outside Russian territory. Moreover, the epidemic of disintegration infected Russia itself (Vladimir Putin, Annual Address to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, April 25, 2005).

Notice that most of Putin’s fans live in the most commie/fascist states in our own country and are more recently descended from Europe than most. In Europe, most of Putin’s fans outside of Russia live in southern Europe and parts of the Balkans (see Roman Empire).

So, I am supposed to take seriously a writing that does not comprehend that Orthodoxy is Christianity?

This opinion piece is wrong all over the place. Misinformed...deluded.
Fact: Russia is far more Christian again today than the US is and probably ever was.
Fact: Russia’s “freedom” is inherently more intrinsic than the freedoms boasted of in the US especially in the last 20+ years.

This is the same Dugin who was photographed meeting with former American Ku Klux Klan leader and neo-Nazi David Duke in Russia. Duke argues, like many Russian nationalists, that communism was imposed on Russia by a Jewish banker conspiracy.Since he pretty much believes the same thing, Buchanan's sympathy for Putin is unsurprising.
