resident Barack Obama Tuesday suggested that the U.S. government should follow Australias example in dealing with shooting sprees, which involved strict gun bans on semiautomatic and automatic weapons.
Australia had a mass shooting [in 1996] similar to Columbine and Newtown, and just said, Thats it, were not seeing that again, and basically imposed very severe tough gun laws and they havent had a mass shooting since, Obama said, after he was asked for his reaction to recent shooting episodes in California and Oregon. Those laws included the confiscation of nearly all handguns and rifles.
We can have respect for the Second Amendment and responsible hunters and sportsmen can have possess weapons, Obama told an audience of students during a broadcast on the Tumblr website.
But the country needs commonsense rules in place that make a dent in whats happening, he said, after an emotional appeal to the students and young people who were watching the Tumblr broadcast, which was advertised as a question-and-answer session about student debt.
Australia also instituted a gun buy-back program and a national registery and licensing system in the wake of the April 1996 mass shooting.
Obamas statement is likely to cause heartburn for Democratic candidates in Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas and other states where gun rights are valued.
But it may also spur turnout among young Democratic voters, who are demoralized by the lousy Obama economy.
Obamas comments on guns came after the host asked him about the recent shootings, and Obama replied with an unusually emotional pitch.
My greatest frustration so far is that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people you know who can do just unbelievable damage, he said.
Were the only developed country on Earth where this happens. Our level of gun violence is off the charts. Theres no advanced developing country on Earth that would put up with this, he said.
Obama dismissed the argument that shootings are not the fault of the mental health of Americans. The U.S. does not have a monopoly on crazy people, its not the only country that has psychosis, and yet we kill each other in these mass shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than anyplace else, Obama said.
Obama did refer to the Second Amendment, but didnt describe the limits that it imposes on government. We have a Second Amendment, we have historically respected gun rights, I respect gun rights, but the idea that we could not get a background check [into law] makes no sense, he complained.
Ive been in Washington, and most things dont surprise me, [but] the fact that 20 six-year-olds were gunned down in the most violent fashion possible and this town could not do anything about it, was stunning to me, he said about the Newtown shooting in December 2012.
If public opinion does not demand a change in Congress, it will not change, he said.
Since most of those are his sons and daughters, I can see why he became emotional.
Obviously, we should logically begin by banning gun ownership to all of his sons and daughters.
Paradoxically, that alone may solve the vexing so-called conundrum about guns running off by theirselves and shooting people.!
The murder rate is actually the lowest it has been in about 50 years. It is much much lower than it was in the 1990's, before law abiding men and women started carrying concealed semi-automatic pistols concealed.
That seems to be the only reason that England aint overrun by the muzzis is because of the so called hooligans.
When I said in my earlier post that any and all action is justified, I was referring to Obama. When he finally crosses the line and starts suspending the Second Amendment for “public safety” then he will be able to justify suspending any and all Constitutional rights because of public safety. The 2nd Amendment would be his starting point because of the easy emotional appeal he can make using tragedy such as the Newtown shootings. We all know it will be the starting point for the dictator but certainly not the end. I agree with those who say that this is a red line.
After the BLM’s adventure with swat teams, military style equipment, and weapons that would make foreign nations envious, and since that adventure was directed at a plain old American citizen, there is no way that freedom loving Americans should trust any governmental agent or agency. They are armed to the teeth.
And they want to take your guns.
Wake up America.
So how, pray tell, was the Port Arthur Massacre similar to Columbine and Newtown. It did not take place at a school. It did not involve a student, nor was it particularly aimed at students. The shooter was supposedly someone who did not have full mental capacity, yet hit most of his victims with head shots in rapid fire in a restaurant.
There are questions about all three events, in terms of who, how many, if the accused (and deceased, presumably) shooters were the only ones, or whether they had some help.
There is a distinct possibility that all shooters were getting help with mental problems, including medication.
and then there is rampant speculation that all three events were false flag events triggered or conducted (or even simulated) to push legislation to diminish the ability of the respective populations to own firearms--maybe that's the similarity he was referring to...
Eliminate private firearms because of a few whackjobs?
We have had a higher percentage of Presidents abuse the power of their Office than gun owners abuse their RKBA, maybe we should eliminate the Office by that logic.
Can’t find a written transcript, but found the video at http://whitehouse.tumblr.com/post/88412719118/in-case-you-missed-it-president-obama-answers-your starting about 39 minutes in.
And when it was revealed by Biden earlier that there have been something like only 57 prosecutions for perjury on the millions of gun forms (ATF Form 4473), once again we see the call for more and more laws and bans when the basic “enforcement” hasn’t been done with existing laws and regulations. Lawlessness leads to more lawlessness.
