Food stamps should by meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, bread, peanut butter and dairy. Instead they buy sugary cereals and soda. For what? To ruin their health? I should not have to pay to ruin their health, then have to pay for their healthcare on top of it.

So could banning ice cream, butter, potatoes, pasta, etc. etc. I guess the only reals solution is to do away with food stamps.

Look, I'm not in favor of government intrusion into our lives, but banning sodas, snacks, chips and candy would be a good start for food stamps. After all, these people are the starving poor, right? I mean, that's why my taxes pay for their food stamps, or so I'm told. So they should be limited to cost effective, nutritional foods (or at least more nutritional food than I'm seeing being purchased.)

I remember Mario Batali taking the "Food Stamp Challenge" and lamenting that he couldn't afford the quality of shrimp he was used to using and had to substitute higher count shrimp to properly prepare his dish. He proclaimed that it was impossible to feed a family of four on their food stamp allotment.

It's funny. When I look at the grocery these days, the "staples" -- rice, beans, most canned vegetables, flour, pasta are all still pretty cheap if you shop around. But what do I see in the Food Stamp cart? Canned soda, Sports Drinks, Snack Cakes, single serve chips and candy bars.

They will just buy cart after cart of some food product that has a deposit...

Not so much for the deposit as for trading purposes. It's not uncommon for food stamp folks to buy an item in bulk, then trade it to a mom-and-pop food store for other items, or for discounted cash.

You can’t buy alcohol with food stamps.
Hows that working out?

If we must have a food stamp program, limit it to fruits, vegetables, meats, breads, dairy and certain condiments. There is no need for tax payers to supplement the rest of the garbage.

not in my neighborhood....

this is a story of eviromentalnuts gone crazy....we have large reservoirs right down the road...they are lined with pine trees...the pine needles fall off the trees into the reservoir and clog the filtration system...the left wing lunatics have prevented to town from cutting down the trees around the reservoir so instead we got critical notices from the town’s department of health suggesting we boil the water that comes out of the tap before drinking it...

Had a vendor from Massachusetts take me to lunch a year or so ago. They had an incident there where one of their hard working food stamp moochers shut down an aluminum can for cash recycling machine by feeding full cans of soda into it.

At least our slackards here in Pennsylvania have the ambition to drink the soda before cashing in the cans.

What'd they do, chain themselves to the trees? No? Then what you have there are elected officials without the cojones to say "EFF YOU" to the left wing lunatics. Make sure they know that they will be replaced next opportunity.

That's a good start toward banning junk food and making food stamp recipients more healthy, independent and productive. Might even try giving them some small dollar or other incentive to take their own initiatives to reduce expensive junk food consumption and generally reduce grocery bills. It would work with the few here and there, who aren't on drugs or whatever and would save a little money for all. Give 'em more incentive for gardening (maybe a break from one local regulation against doing their own building, service, whatever).

Then do the same with other programs on energy consumption, transportation, repairs, etc. They cut costs for themselves and everyone, everyone wins. Give 'em a few ways around some regulations, and maybe a few of them will produce something on their own.

The government-linked establishment is going to run out of recirculating debt anyway and won't be employing anyone. Might as well get a bit of economic activity going in the meantime.

Hey, why stop a sodas? Lets ban all candy, and high fat foods, and all canned foods, and foods that contain added sugar, oh and anything not organic. Heck, if we keep it up, the only area that they will be able to shop at is the organic section of the vegetable isle. That will teach them!

Another solution would be to shut down all so-called employment that is dependent in any way on regulations, subsidies and anti-competition laws and positions that are not producing anything of good use or as competitive as free market positions (e.g. public school incomes). Then, many more Americans would work for their living. Granted, politic activities would suddenly become quieter, more civil, lesser forms of entertainment.

A 2-liter bottle of coke just cleaned my toilet bowl. That is the best use of the product.

I'd settle for banning casinos and Crown Royale.

Royal Crown . . Crown Royale, what difference does it make?
