T.W. U.S. Senate candidate T.W. Shannon told a Christian business group on Monday he believes God is raising up ... a new generation of leaders to return to biblical principles.
Those principles apparently include strict adherence to a free market economy, elimination of the federal minimum wage and most if not all federal health care programs, and telling people on welfare to get a job.
One of the biggest challenges in our country, if you boil it all down, is that we have more takers than makers, he said. We have a whole generation of people that have been taught that dependency on government is a way of life.
Shannon was speaking to the Young Businessmen of Tulsa, a group affiliated with the International Fellowship of Christian Businessmen, and tailored his remarks accordingly.
Describing his tenure as speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Shannon said, We were able to achieve some things that reflect what I believe is the majority of the members biblical worldview.
As examples, Shannon cited workers compensation reform, a modest income tax cut (disallowed on a technicality by the state Supreme Court) and welfare reform.
The Bible says that where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, Shannon said. When we see liberty being imposed upon ... we need more spirit of the Lord.

TW Shannon is DEFINITELY NOT a New Deal republican! We need him to get the nomination so he can get elected to the Senate.
Lankford has been endorsed by Mike Huckabee, and we all know what that means!
“Those principles apparently include strict adherence to a free market economy, elimination of the federal minimum wage and most if not all federal health care programs, and telling people on welfare to get a job.”
Oh the Tulsa World. It must be hard being a communist in the most conservative city in America.
Preach it, brother. Preach it! Stand strong for the Lord and He will give you the strength of Joshua!
If this guy gets into the Senate, the liberals will SCREAM!
Great idea!
Government Minimum Wage Laws do the following:
* Restrict a worker’s freedom of choice in negotiating a wage with an employer.
* Restrict an employer’s freedom of choice in negotiating a wage with a worker.
* Perform the function of a Labor Union by mandating Collective Bargaining for an always increasing minimum wage.
* Mandated Government Laws are made by Politicians who use fines and jails to punish those who oppose them.
The minimum wage has ALWAYS been a stupid idea. It was instituted so that nobody could undercut the union wage at the time.
All it does is raise prices, which undercuts the buying power of the people it’s intended to help. AND, the rest of us, who do not also get a pay increase, have to pay those higher prices. Not to mention waiting in longer lines at retail stores, etc. because they can’t afford extra help due to the higher wage mandates.
It’s been a bad idea across the board. It only helps unions (whose contracts are linked to the minimum wage) and politicians (who demagogue).
There is absolutely no chance of this guy getting to the Senate...I wouldn't even vote for him...
I dont think the government should be setting a minimum wage, he said. I think the market should dictate that.
I can see it now...2 jobs...30,000 illegal Mexicans looking for work and the employer says, I'll hire the first two who will work for 2 bucks and hour...
I certainly think ... the minimum wage is a challenge for someone supporting a family, but the reality is that the people on minimum wage are only there for a temporary time.
This guy needs to get out into the real world...
Those principles apparently include strict adherence to a free market economy, elimination of the federal minimum wage and most if not all federal health care programs, and telling people on welfare to get a job.
Really??? And where are they going to go to get a job, China??? Mexico???
But not a peep about getting normal manufacturing jobs back into America??? And not a word about getting our crucial military projects back in to America???
No thanks...
Sure, eliminating the minimum wage is in and of itself an excellent idea, but we can't count on Shannon to show up and vote for it.
During Shannon's first six years as a legislator he presented bills on the Floor of the House of Representatives 27 times. 14 of those bills were acted on without any debate or discussion. Of the remaining 13 bills, 12 had questions asked and 3 bills were debated. This means that Shannon stood on the floor of the House slightly less than 4 minutes in debate and 11 minutes answering questions over a 6 year period.

I also really take issue winking at Lankford’s endorsement from Huckabee. Yeah, I get it that Free Republic isn't especially fond of Huckabee, but Lankford has also been endorsed by a huge portion of the OK State Senate (Republican controlled), Trey Gowdy, and others.

We don't need do-nothing platitudes like “We need a strong whatever to whatever.” What we really need is someone who is going to show up and do their job. We need someone who can reasonably represent Oklahomans, and you can't do that if you never show up to vote. You can't represent Oklahomans if during the entire length of your tenured seven-year political career from the age of 28, if you never stand up and actually speak on behalf of your constituents.
I guess you’re a New Dealer then??

This is why Huckabee endorsed Lankford. Because of his pathetic conservative record. He’ll be a go-along type.
Lankford 75% (Average) 83% (Heritage) 80% (ACU) 70% (CFG) 68% (FreedomWorks)
Only the states have the 10th Amendment-protected power to regulate intrastate minimum wage and overtime rates. In fact, regardless what FDR's activist justices wanted everybody to think about the scope of Congress's Commerce Clause powers in Wickard v. Filburn, FDR's justices wrongly ignored that a previous generation of justices had officially clarified that Congress has no authority to regulate intrastate commerce.
State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress [emphases added]. Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
Also note that the states can always amend the Constitution to grant Congress the specific power to regulate minimum wage should the states decided that doing so is the best approach to handling minimum wage.
Otherwise, the reason that we have a national minimum wage is the following imo. Corrupt federal lawmakers for decades have been taking advantage of low-information voter, voters whose parents have not been making sure that their children are being taught about the federal government's constitutionally limited powers, dangling the carrot of constitutionally indefensible federal minimum wage in front of these voters in order to win their votes.
There! Federal minimum wage has been eliminated and I didn't need to become a lawmaker in order to eliminate it.
I must have missed where the Bible covered those. And as for Mr. Shannon, he's about to get walloped by the Biblical principle that advocating doing away with Medicare is generally fatal to your political future.
This still dodges the point that Shannon has rarely showed up to vote this session, and almost never speaks on the floor of the Oklahoma House. There’s nothing more typical of a “go-along” politician than someone who doesn’t do their job.
I’m not personally thrilled about the Huckabee endorsement either, but some of the pro-Shannon guys I’ve seen seem to think that is the most important nail in Lankford’s coffin.
“This still dodges the point that Shannon has rarely showed up to vote this session, and almost never speaks on the floor of the Oklahoma House”
Your comments about it are the first I’ve heard about it. Though I imagine it’s because he’s running for another office. That’s usually the case. If they’re important votes, he should be returning for them. But if he sees that his vote wouldn’t change the outcome anyway, he probably doesn’t care. His eyes are on his senate campaign. That’s the nature of politicians.
I actually understand this quite well. T.W. Shannon is quite the campaigner. He’s spent more time scoring big endorsements than he has in candidate debates, and representing his constituents; however, I think it goes deeper. Shannon has spoken on the floor of the OK House of Reps for a grand total of 15 minutes during the course of his entire career. Lankford is going after a bigger office, but that hasn’t stopped him from voting in a Republican controlled House.
Well you’re there in OK. Who do you think would be the better senator? Who would vote for conservatism the most?
That said, I do have a couple of reservations about him. Unless something very strange happens between now and the primary, Crow is not going to win. The race has tightened enough between Lankford and Shannon, that I'm beginning to entertain thoughts of voting for Lankford just to try to keep Shannon out of the office.
If you're interested in Crow at all, this is a link to his announcement speech:
Care to list the votes Boehner has cast.
I don’t understand. Do you think Shannon is not sufficiently conservative and will be a bad senator or do you just not like him because he’s skipped votes.
Personally, I couldn’t vote somebody with such a low conservative rating as Lankford, but then I live in MA, and no congressman here would reach even his level.
I’d like to see as a conservative a senate as possible. Coburn’s rating is much higher than that. I’d hate to see a state like Oklahoma elect a candidate that’s less conservative than Coburn.
I’m not an especially big fan of Boehner, I think he hasn’t worked hard enough for conservative principles, and he’s too buddy-buddy with the White House.
