Seventy years after Allied troops stormed the beaches at Normandy, President Barack Obama returned to the hallowed battleground today to remember the soldiers who fought on its shores - and to give an emotional tribute to his own grandfather.
On Friday morning, the president spoke at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, where nearly 10,000 white marble tombstones sit on a bluff overlooking the site of the June 6, 1944, battle's most violent fighting at Omaha Beach.
'We are on this Earth for only a moment in time, and fewer of us have parents and grandparents to tell us about what the veterans of D-Day did here 70 years ago,'(continued)

Obama writes in his memoir, Dreams From My Father, “Id arrived at an unspoken pact with my grandparents: I could live with them and they’d leave me alone so long as I kept my trouble out of sight.”

Was this the grandfather who liberated a concentration camp, one that was actually liberated by the Russian army? Or was that done by some other relative of his?

My late father fought for years in the Pacific and I’ll bet most people here have a relative that was in World War II. Something like 12 million people at a time served in the armed forces then versus about 2 million now. What’s his point?

I gotta give Obama credit on this one. He only referred to himself 18 times during this speech. Compared to his West Point Commencement speech (144 first-person references), this was the most selfless speech of his entire political career.
