Anger Explodes Over Treatment of Bergdahl’s Release as Veterans, Troops Call Him a Deserter

For all the yellow ribbons strewn across his hometown in Idaho and the gratitude expressed by his parents in an emotional visit to the White House on Saturday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to the United States after nearly five years in Taliban captivity.

From military forums across the country, a groundswell of anger is rising over the Obama administration’s silence on perhaps the most controversial question surrounding the deal that freed Bergdahl in exchange for five senior Taliban members: Was he a deserter?

So far, the U.S. government has shied away from the long-nagging question, which raged anew Monday with growing clamor on the Internet about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his unit’s small forward position in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009.

Military-related blogs, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages were filled with screeds from commenters accusing Bergdahl of being a “traitor” or a Taliban “collaborator.” The online publication The Daily Beast published a nearly 2,000-word first-person account by a former Army infantry officer who said he was privy to details of Bergdahl’s disappearance and who stated flatly that “he was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down.”

The mother of one of six soldiers who’ve been identified as being killed in circumstances related to the search for Bergdahl was furious over the opaque handling of the case, telling Army Times that the Pentagon “really owes the parents of these fallen soldiers the truth.”

But instead of addressing the desertion issue head-on, complained many military analysts and war veterans, the Obama administration is allowing the debate to fester, only deepening the skepticism of current and former service members who demand to know how Bergdahl left his unit,...

The father didn’t speak in Pashto as is constantly mis- reported in the media. He spoke in Arabic:
“bism allah alrahman alraheem” – which means “in the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful” By speaking those words on the WH grounds he sanctified it for Allah and claimed it for Islam. Six men died in the search for a PFC not SGT that walked off his post to join the Taliban and his father is “proud of him”?

Since when are the Taliban given nation-like status?

Eagles6, according to this post by Persevero earlier on a different thread, dad is not affiliated with the Muslim religion. He could very well be correct or maybe dad was a sleeper? I’ve no idea, sharing Persevero’s post because it’s the first thing I’ve seen even close to someone who really knows the parents. NOT defending dad, Bowe or anyone, just putting this out there.

*Persevero’s find from FB, posted on FR here, post 134:

Ok, this was posted publicly on Facebook, so I am cutting and pasting. This is who and what I know. Take it for what it is worth. I believe we all agree that we want the truth to come out.

“Glenn was the pastor of the Bergdahls when their son was taken captive. I am posting this with his permission.

Glenn: Now, supposedly, Bowe is a traitor, Bob is a “Muslim sleeper,” and terrorists have been released to threaten the USA.

Let me point out:

1) Only Bowe Bergdahl knows the exact circumstances of his capture. Though it may have been foolish for him to walk a few yards away from his bunker in Eastern Afghanistan, he hardly had the liberty to return the next morning. So, could he be charged or convicted of desertion? If it was a foolish act, he has paid a heavy price for his his actions. The military will sort out these matters. Bowe may prove an invaluable source of intelligence of Taliban activities over the last five years.

2) At the dissolution of Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church (OPC) in Boise last year, Bob and Janil were members in good standing. Though Bob tends toward Libertarian political views, reads Calvin and Rushdoony, questions some aspects of US Middle-eastern foreign and military policy, isn’t that what being an American is about... the right to question our government and its actions, and to hold strange views, even to be a Calvinist or Theonomist or Libertarian? To the best of my knowledge, Bob has been a desperate father trying to learn as much about his son’s captors in a time when he never knew if he’d see him alive again.

If Bob were a Muslim, would we rejoice any less in the return of a son and brother from five years captivity, when whether he was alive or dead, and how he was treated, was unknown?

I remember Bob’s concern for the salvation of his son when he was captured. He told me, “I pray as much for his conversion to Christ as I do for his life to be spared.”

3) Are the Guantanamo detainees POWs or criminals? If criminals, give them fair trials and if convicted impose a just sentence. If POWs, there will come a time when they will all be released; which is normal in the cessation of hostilities. So, if they are going to eventually be released, didn’t it make sense to get something for five of them. Prisoner exchanges are often part of most wars. Israel, a few years ago, released a thousand Palestinian prisoners to obtain the release of one of their soldiers. I given the president some credit for taking bold and potentially controversial action to save Bowe’s life and return him home.

Can’t these conspiracy accusers shut up for a week or two and let the Bergdahls enjoy having their son, who once seemed dead and is yet alive, safe in American hands?”

And could end up in the klink back in the good old USA for desertion to boot. What a culture shock.

That would be quite a shock to Zero's narrative, so far.

But Zero does have his pen and can pardon the kid with a stroke of it.

Then it will be up to the MSM to see what they can do.

They should save their vitriol for the architect and author of this outrage - the treasonous monster in the White House.

> There needs to be a thorough MILITARY , non civilian , non political , public investigation

Nope. The military does what is ordered to do. In this case, it’s clearly been ordered to give this guy a promotion, not a hanging. Any military trial’s outcome is already pre-ordained.

But...but...but....the media, even the local media here in Florida has been telling us Obama has released a GREAT HERO and the people of his hometown are sooooo anxious to laud his return!!!

Guess it is just more of the pro-Obama propaganda.

I read that the Taliban are ecstatic about this precisely because they think it gives them nation status and confirms them as the real government of Afghanistan. Various of their spokesman said yesterday that they were ecstatic that the US has recognized them as the true power.

Nice try, but there is no conspiracy here and the response to whole prisoner swap is actually more subdued than it deserves to be.

Direct witnesses who are fellow soldiers have explicitly stated that this guy is at best a deserter and potentially a traitor.

He does not deserve a week or two of time with his family, he deserves to be thrown in the stockade at Leavenworth pending an inquiry into his behavior over the last 5 years

That rising tide needs to clean the White House, relief is clearly not coming from Congress.
