For all the yellow ribbons strewn across his hometown in Idaho and the gratitude expressed by his parents in an emotional visit to the White House on Saturday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to the United States after nearly five years in Taliban captivity.
From military forums across the country, a groundswell of anger is rising over the Obama administration’s silence on perhaps the most controversial question surrounding the deal that freed Bergdahl in exchange for five senior Taliban members: Was he a deserter?
So far, the U.S. government has shied away from the long-nagging question, which raged anew Monday with growing clamor on the Internet about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his unit’s small forward position in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009.
Military-related blogs, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages were filled with screeds from commenters accusing Bergdahl of being a “traitor” or a Taliban “collaborator.” The online publication The Daily Beast published a nearly 2,000-word first-person account by a former Army infantry officer who said he was privy to details of Bergdahl’s disappearance and who stated flatly that “he was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down.”
The mother of one of six soldiers who’ve been identified as being killed in circumstances related to the search for Bergdahl was furious over the opaque handling of the case, telling Army Times that the Pentagon “really owes the parents of these fallen soldiers the truth.”
But instead of addressing the desertion issue head-on, complained many military analysts and war veterans, the Obama administration is allowing the debate to fester, only deepening the skepticism of current and former service members who demand to know how Bergdahl left his unit,...

I have not read ANYTHING conflicting other than the mouthings of the Obama administration about his “honorable” service. His comrades-in-arms, who would be in the best position to know, are positive that he deserted. Pentagon seems to have known where he was, and didn’t go about getting him back bc they didn’t want to risk more lives for a deserter. What have you seen that casts doubt on deserter status?

As I read the comments on these stories and more and more people are coming to the realization that Obama is out to destroy this once-great Country, it is abundantly clear that we all need to remind our fellow Americans that he’s NOT ALONE in his misdeeds.

My answer ... Although have seen nothing that is counter to that charge, am withholding judgment till see more facts. I do not doubt the Men, whom were there in Afghanistan, and their releases of information stating desertion. Am simply stating this should be stated/handled/settled in a Military Trial away from obama's control and the media's spin. (mho)
i hope it will get to a military trial, and not be swept under the rug by Obama et al. I think that the media is reporting this fairly accurately, thus far, and the hue and cry is growing. IMO that’s a good thing because it may force it to a military tribunal.
While I appreciate your response, an Orthodox Presbyterian denomination, much like my PCA Presbyterian, are not given to radical thought or action......We are Calvinist, yes......and conservative to the core.

I recall reading that the Bergdahls were somewhat reclusive, and that junior had been homeschooled and didn’t get out much.
Look at post #104 above. I think their “church” was probably affiliated with the Presbyterian church in some way, but evidently that’s over now.
I’m sure there are some great Idahoans (particularly on FR, of course), but there are a lot of wacky cults, both religious and political, and a lot of wacky individuals who take advantage of the isolation to hole up and get wackier.
If Obama thought he was getting Mr. Presbyterian Middle America to show up and support him, I think he made a serious mistake...

As I recall the first level of punishment for simple AWOL is forfeiture of pay. The next step is forfeiture of some part of future pay. In this case his check was probably going electronically to a bank where his mom might have spent it already? I think Bowe Bergdahl will probably plead insanity, since he’s now refusing to speak English, and his father’s message to him (”people are coming to help you, listen to them”) probably means the military shrinks sent by Obama are going to be his get out of jail free card.
