NRA: Texas open carry rallies ‘downright weird’ and ‘scary’
Houston Chronicle ^ | 5/2/14 | Lauren McGaughy

Starbucks, Chipotle, Sonic and other food and drink chains have an unexpected new ally in their recent decisions to discourage the carrying of firearms in their establishments: the NRA.

On Friday, the NRA weighed in on a spate of recent open carry rallies across Texas, calling them “scary” and “shows a lack of consideration and manners” out of character in the Lone Star State.

In reality, some nut cases do still try to rob gun stores or shoot up police stations.

I haven’t heard of one surviving the attempt, so it may be safe to assume that recidivism is relatively low. :-)

I’d rather have the option of being able to return fire regardless.

And this is why what these folks are doing is IMPORTANT. This has been done in several states successfully including VA, PA, and WI. I for one wish them all the best of luck in their mission.

Probably worth noting that Texans don't react the same way people in other states do. Right now, public opinion is focusing on banning long gun open carry instead of allowing handgun open carry. I personally want the option to carry less concealed, but right now, it is more likely long guns will be banned.

If the outcome of this is Texans banning long guns then I think it is time to just abandon the state as a total loss.

I wouldn't argue that at all, the demographics will shift no later than 2020 and disallow any form of conservative leadership in the executive branch, and you can count on that.

We have a Right to both KEEP and to BEAR armaments. It doesn't stipulate what kind of armaments nor the manner in which they should be born. During the Founders time, it was rare to find a firearm small enough to conceal in any practical manner.

This remarkable, exceptional country was built on Biblical principles by the intelligent men known as the Founding Fathers. Guns guarantee our freedom and secure our liberties as granted by the Almightly as a Natural Right.

In my opinion, carrying a visible firearm into a restaurant, as done by the Patriots of Open Carry Texas, is the equivalent of carrying a Bible into such an establishment.

Which is some of the more restrictive rules in the nation. It is about time yall started fighting to get your open carry rights back.

No argument, but the current opinion shift is to ban long gun open carry, no allow handgun open carry.

The Founders did not have the the nineteenth amendment to contend with.

I think patience, guile, and subtlety are more effective than arrogance, truculence, and flagrance. And I think open carry should be legal and the exercise of that right should be reserved for situations that require it. That is not sitting in the back of the bus. That is being a responsible adult. Like it or not, rights come with responsibilities and limitations. We are under a microscope right now and public sentiment on this issue has proved highly labile. Patience, subtlety, guile and steadfast determination are what we need right now, not videos of bearded men in restaurants with assault rifles.

Having lived in Texas, and held a Texas carry permit, I know what their laws are.

I also know those law are in violation of the Second Amendment as per Art 6 para 2’s Supremacy clause.

Yes, I know the “courts” have manufactured a “power” to selectively allow us the full protection of the Bill of Rights, but this doesn’t make them correct.

It should make you feel a small twinge of shame that you live in TEXAS and yet I now live in Minnesota and have greater latitude in firearms carry than you do.

Rather than berating the OCT folks, get out there, show ‘em how to do it right, and fulfill the true promise of “old West freedom” Texas keeps getting labeled with.

Not sure where you're thinking... while I'd love to see Constitutional carry, Texas does allow all citizens to carry concealed, loaded, in their vehicle. Many states do not allow this.

Not worried about the 19th A.

Much, MUCH more worried about the 17th. That alone created an imbalance in the “checks” that has led to untold mischief.

Sure. You go be all full of guile and let us know how that works for you.

You are trying to play chess against the Left’s pigeons.

Good luck with that...

How's old Al Franken doing?

The Senator that was fraudulently elected? Hopefully, getting his walking papers this Fall.

I would also note, that even with a Democrat governor and a Democrat controlled Legislature, they utterly failed to enact any new gun control laws.

Still doesn’t detract from being one of the most shameful states in the Union. We all have our idiot congressmen, but Minn takes the cake, well between her and Jessie Ventura.

But it would. Tthe problem is that over time, states gave up their rights to make liberal feel better about themselves. This country originally was open carry. What changed? People did. They moved away from a foundational liberty and the result was massive crime and a legal system that punishes a man for protecting himself/family. Women too.

The very same truth applies to kids acting like animals, politicians acting like royalty...it all happens because instead of asserting our rights and demanding them, we abandoned them. As people, as citizens and as parents.

There is not one logical argument that explains why people 200ish years ago were capable of self control and we, supposedly so much smarter than those rubes, cannot.

It all comes down to ‘feelings’. Not fact, logic or reason. And when feelings usurp rights, we are no longer America.

Because I choose not to carry my rifle into a burger joint?
Patriots should be bigger thinkers than that.

“So there’s nothing wrong with open carry to raise consciousness, just that these guys were doing it ineffectively?”

Yes. There’s been a comparison to Rosa Parks used several times here. These guys looked more like the infamous picture of the Black Panthers intimidating people at the poling place.
