CKE Restaurants' roots began in California roughly seven decades ago, but you won't see the parent company of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's expanding there much anymore. Related Stories
What's causing what company CEO Andy Puzder describes as "very little growth" in the state?
In part it's because "the minimum wage is so high so it's harder to come up with profitable business models," Puzder said in an interview. The state's minimum wage is set to rise to $9 in July, making it among the nation's highest, and $10 by January 2016.
In cities in other states where the minimum wage has gone up considerably, Puzder said "franchisees are closing locations" after riding out lease expirations.

In my earlier posts I was arguing that massive low skill LEGAL immigration has destroyed the wage scale for low skill Americans
A large number of legal immigration visas are in the technology fields which certainly make vastly more than low wage...
Illegal immigration affects the wage scale far more...
Millions of home grown Americans will now start applying for jobs they would not have accepted at a lower wage.
Nonsense, unless they are already useless parasites...
They will begin to vote against the politicians who favor massive immigration.
LOL...not in numbers great enough to matter
And, best of all, the companies that have sold their souls for cheap foreign labor will now have to pay $15/Hour for the immigrants they claimed were essential for American business!
Going off the rails here...you do understand that will cost literally 100,000's jobs per year and drive many small business out of business...kill entrepreneurship and job creation...
Again, I ask how is the union job working out for you !!!
Yes I guess I shouldve said BACK....but then I could say its a REPEET, Peet.
The “back” part of the situation makes me wonder (1) why did they close up shop and leave in the first place and (2) what has changed to make it feasible to re-enter the N.E. market?
Just idle thoughts...I’m not sure they’d answer if they could.
If I recall, Hardee’s left during a bankruptcy. At that time, it was owned by a Canadian company (I believe Imseco). Now, owned by Carl’sJr (CKE), it is stronger.
To stand in the unemployment line, perhaps...where will the jobs be if minimum wage labor (IE, unskilled) costs $15/hr?
The first sign of economic ignorance and intellectual arrogance (which always, ALWAYS go hand in hand) is the belief you can screw with markets with no negative consequences.
A corollary of that is the belief your good intentions justifies screwing around with the lives of others...and have no doubt, when you screw with markets, that's what you're doing...again, with no negative consequences.
Anyone giving it sufficient thought and study would conclude it can't be done, yet each generation provides a new crop of those who are convinced THEY are smart enough to make it work. Such as yourself.
I disagree.
The supply of low skill labor in America has been deliberately and massively increased by government immigration policy.
If I understand your comment, you avidly support this economic distortion.
Unfortunately, your policy has caused wages to stagnate, or go down, for almost 70% of American wage earners.
My $15/Hour minimum wage would redress some of the terrible economic damage your mass immigration policy has caused.
My policy would also put immediate pressure on politicians to reduce immigration.
Since 80% of new immigrant citizens vote for the Democrat Party, my policy would also redress some of the terrible political damage your policy has caused for Conservatives.

No question that some people will lose jobs when the $15 wage goes into effect.
However, most of them will be lost from businesses that were designed to run on cheap foreign labor.
There will be dislocation and pain.
Then, smarter and more creative entrepreneurs will step in and start producing the same products for a profit.
Adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage has gone down for 40 years.
But, adjusted for inflation, the cost of energy, taxes, insurance, and government regulation have doubled or tripled.
Somehow, business owners adapted to those new costs.
They will adapt to the new cost of labor, also.
Re: Fallacious
You are talking about Work Visas.
I am talking about Green Cards (”Legal Permanent Residents”).
Work Visas are not an urgent problem.
In sharp contrast, Green Cards are an existential threat, for low skill American workers, and, politically, for Conservatives.
We issue at least 1 million Green Cards per year, every year.
There are 15 million immigrants in America who have Green Cards, and they can legally apply for almost every job in the country.
Most of those 15 million legal immigrants are low skill family members of other low skill legal immigrants.
Most important of all, a Green Card is a direct path to US citizenship, at least for those who decide to seek it.
Since 2000, 10 million Green Card holders have “graduated” to US citizenship.
80% of them vote for the Democrat Party.
Since the 1986 Reagan Amnesty, the Democrat Party has imported 20 million Socialist voters from foreign countries.
Please remember that the next time you wonder why Conservatives have such a hard time winning elections.
Re: Parasites
I agree, they will not apply for $15/Hour jobs.
However, American students will apply, American homemakers will apply, and American senior citizens will apply.
Fast food is a tiny segment of the economy.
There are store clerk jobs, security guard jobs, hotel desk clerk jobs, and dozens more like that.
And when those American born applicants go to vote, they will wonder why they have to compete against workers who speak English with a foreign accent.
Re: Off The Rails
No question about it - jobs will be lost.
But every well managed business will survive.
And new jobs will be created, slowly at first, but eventually.
Inflation adjusted wages haven’t gone up in 15 years because there is a massive, artificially created oversupply of low skill labor.
Why should wages be any different than the price of energy, raw materials, taxes, insurance, and government regulations?
Unfortunately, your policy has caused wages to stagnate, or go down, for almost 70% of American wage earners.
I support controlled borders...open borders is not my policy. Perhaps you can refresh my memory...when did I say it was?
My $15/Hour minimum wage would redress some of the terrible economic damage your mass immigration policy has caused.
Ignorance and arrogance are a toxic mix. You've said that the supply of "cheap labor" has been increased by the open borders policy...yet, you propose to move the supply/demand point further out of balance, by decreasing the demand for labor at the artificial, higher 'minimum wage.' How will this work? Why will it not make the problem worse? What do you intend to do with the resulting millions who are unemployable at $15/hr?
As for arrogance...you say you come from a long line of small business people. None of the knowledge and wisdom (IE, a sense of one's own limits)seems to have made it this far down the family tree. I will put it to you as simply as I can...other people's lives are not your playthings. Their wealth and property is not yours to F#$K around with.
When you propose to play God, you're responsible for the consequences. Why should we agree to screw up the economy?
Your rhetoric is lefty in tone and union in content. Good luck trying to sell that as conservative.
Re: “I support controlled borders...open borders is not my policy.”
I never claimed you supported “Open Borders.”
I said you support our current policy of mass LEGAL immigration.
Your LEGAL immigration policy has created 15 million new Green Cards since 2000.
Your LEGAL immigration policy has created 8.4 million new Socialist voters since 2000.
Are you now claiming you oppose 1.1 million new Green Cards each year?
Are you now claiming you oppose 750,000 new immigrant citizens each year?
When did this happen?
You certainly haven’t written about it.
Re: “What do you intend to do with the resulting millions who are unemployable at $15/hr?”
I’ll watch them march to the polls and vote out the politicians who created the mass LEGAL immigration policies you support.
Do you not understand the political comedy here?
Democrats are demanding a $15 wage, but they - and you - have failed to understand that will completely destroy the economic rationale for mass LEGAL immigration.
Democrats want $15 bucks?
Give it to them!
It’s the only hope Conservatives have to stop mass LEGAL immigration.
Re: “Other people’s lives are not your playthings.”
Nor yours.
Please stop LEGALLY importing foreign labor.
Please stop LEGALLY creating new Socialist voters.
Re: “Your rhetoric is lefty in tone and union in content. Good luck trying to sell that as conservative.”
Actually, I’m one of the best informed and most prolific writers at Free Republic on the subject of LEGAL immigration.
Because of mass LEGAL immigration, Conservatives may have already passed the point of political extinction.
Supporting the $15 wage is my last, desperate, counter-intuitive effort to slow down our political destruction.
If the GOP went to the polls in November advocating a $15 wage, and advocating a total stop for LEGAL low skill immigration, we would cause a political earthquake.
It won’t happen.
But an old man is still allowed dream.
Didn't the government try to run a house of prostitution in Nevada?
That's an interesting idea...if I've not written to that effect, I'm open to being accused?
Those unemployed due to a $15 minimum wage will not vote the socialist authoritarians out...they will double down, blame the Repubs anyway.
Your ill advised $15 minimum wage scheme will have a profound effect on the economy and hundreds of thousands of small businesses. They are not chess pieces to be moved at your whim.
Yes, it did.
The operation has folded.
Re: “That’s an interesting idea...if I’ve not written to that effect, I’m open to being accused?”
Is there another conclusion I can reach?
So, you oppose mass LEGAL immigration.
But, you passionately and vehemently support the artificially depressed wage structure caused by mass LEGAL immigration?
If you want to fix the issue of excessive immigration, fix it.
Your scheme will cause more damage than help.
It's unfixable.
We can only slow down Conservative political extinction.
Time and again, American political history shows we cannot convert our Socialist opponents.
In fact, our own Republican leadership parrots the Democratic Party on every important immigration issue.
Finally, rank and file Conservatives lack the foresight, the organization, and the political will to force repeal of mass legal immigration with our own efforts.
The only reason Conservatives have any political power at all is because we have the highest voter turn out in America.
When non-whites and single white women start to turn out at the same rate Conservatives turn out, the game will be up.
I did a little math experiment after the 2012 election, which Romney lost by 4%.
“What would have happened in 2012 if EVERY eligible voter in America voted?”
I ran the numbers, and Romney lost by 5%.
I'll speculate that the number is worse than 5%.
Since Conservatives are the most highly motivated voters, it seems logical that the people who usually stay home are much further to the Left.
By the way, the conventional wisdom that 4 million Conservatives stayed home in 2012 is a complete fabrication.
Romney got 4 million more white votes than McCain got in 2008.
Obama got 6 million LESS white votes in 2012.
The 4 million whites who stayed home in 2012 voted for Obama in 2008!
But the most important numbers of all are 600,000 and 150,000.
That's how many new Democrats and new Republicans become citizens each year.
Depending on Democrat voter turn out, the White House and a Senate majority are probably now completely out of reach for Republicans.
In 2022, after Congressional redistricting, Republicans will lose the House, and Socialists will take permanent control of the Federal government.
In 2022, you'll be living in that odd little world with me.
excellent post.
I agree with some of what you have posted. But I really am getting a kick out of all the hand wringing from all the “free marketers” here.
Me, too.
They support government policies that flood the country with low skill labor and crush the normal wage scale.
But they go bonkers when government policies attempt to drive wages back up.
