Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Vicki Been said the plan to build 80,000 new affordable apartments and preserve 120,000 units would create a more diverse city.

“We really have to make economic diversity a cornerstone of that plan,” she said at a City Council budget hearing Wednesday. …

I see how they can move the poor, via government housing. But when they say they’ll move the richer into poverty spots, I think what they really mean is get the richer to move to a different city.

That will happen any way. As crime increases in those neighborhoods, those with the ability to move will.

I’d be putting my house up for sale right now, if I were them.

Yeah...that’s gonna work just fine.

New York, New York if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, with a little help from your friends...Vicki Been and De’blah’si’ohno.

but, if they induce more affluent people somehow to move into poorer areas, won’t Spike Lee get p.o.d?? Did they run this plan by Spike???

Spike is offended by the sight of white moms out pushing their strollers. Spike worries that the encroachment of whites into traditionally black areas will change the culture.

Um, don’t they work for US? If they want to know what this will look like, they can come to Pasadena CA and see how busing worked for the City Schools. Thirty years later and millions of dollars, the school district - once top-notch - is probably one of the worst in the nation. The school district spent $1M/ year on buses that could have gone to teachers or classrooms. The private schools are thriving because people pulled their kids out.

What idiocy! Who elected these people and how do they get away with this? Or will they?

(NY) City plans to attack economic segregation by moving poor into middle-class neighborhoods…
Last week, the Rochester NY newspaper (a Gannett rag w/ a VERY racist editor) suggested that the way to overcome all the pooooor people in the city was for the suburbs to provide "affordable housing." Coincidence?

He’s right. And it should.

I remember the Central District in Seattle. It’s still there, but it gets smaller and smaller as the modern version of yuppies buy the old houses on the fringes and modernize them, bringing their trendy shops and starbucks - and vast improvements - to the neighborhoods.

There’s lots of anevdotal evidence from around the country, that if you get too many section 8 residents in an area, that the neighborhood goes ghetto. They are playing with fire with a plan such as this.

This sounds so wonderful but do you really think they will move the poor to exclusive areas or the upper west side?Baloney.

The middle class neighborhoods will be the ones that are destroyed.

Enjoy Mayor Kaiser Wilhelm suckers, you voted for him.

Affordable suburban housing can reduce city povertyThere it is - the solution for relieving poverty is to send the "impoverished" to the suburbs! Classic liberal solution that makes everyone suffer equally.

My first Section 8 renters were great. A young family that eventually outgrew the house after about 4 years. The second... Was a single mom and her mother. She had SIX KIDS by the time she was 24. Once they moved in, there were a lot of ‘uncles’ that came visiting. Never again will I rent to section 8. Luckily they didn’t Completely destroy the house. Section 8 still calls me from time to time. Because they are the feds you can’t tell the to foxtrot oscar.
