PetSmart is the latest major pet food retailer to say it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China because of ongoing fears that they are making pets sick.
The company plans to have the treats off all of its store shelves by March 2015.
"This is something we've been working toward for some time, and feel it's the right thing to do for pets and our customers," said PetSmart spokeswoman Erin Gray.
Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven't been able to prove that treats made in China are making pets ill. But since 2007, it has received more than 4,800 complaints of pet illnesses and more than 1,000 reports of dog deaths after eating Chinese-made chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats.
In an update of its investigation last week, the FDA said it found that antiviral drug amantadine...

Just look for it to be shipped to another country and repackaged like they do with honey.
yeah, the chicoms made that go away by switching the factory over to producing pet treats, same raw material though.
I wish I could say I admire their plan...but it doesnt appear to be as thoughtful as Id expect.
Thanks.
Same here. I always check country of origin for all dog treats.
Of course, I’ll eat anything!
Everything made in China should be tossed into the garbage. That filthy country is poisoning more than our dogs. Our economy is suffering too.
I had a parakeet that got sick circa 2007 and the first thing the vet asked me was, do you buy bird seed from China. I didn’t and the problem wasn’t from that, but it goes to show you that Chinese pet products of all kind have a terrible rep.
Yes they do. I buy expensive cat food from PetCo that's labeled Made in USA, but wish I didn't have to spend so much. Hope your parakeet recovered.
I was in the Costco in the Tustin (CA) District earlier this month and none were there. Maybe Costco is clearing out the stock at your store. I am sure Costco will drop the Chinese stuff once people stop buying it as they depend on high volume sales.
Wait until humans start dying because a large percentage of active pharmaceutical ingredients (especially antibacterial agents) are made in China and exported world wide.
I was at the one in Van Nuys yesterday and still saw some Made in China Jerky Treats..I was looking since I heard a story on CBS 2 a few days ago about a dog dying after eating those treats..I forgot the brand name but I did see other brands that did say made in China..I hope they do clear out their stock because not everyone is aware that giving those treats to dogs can be deadly
“I can just imagine dog treats made out of stuff the Chinese wont eat.”
You just gave a perfect ad slogan for free.
If that’s a valid report -March, 2015 - I will never set foot in another petsmart store....and neither will my human.
The Chinese are the makers of adulterated everything. I won’t give my dog Chinese made food and I won’t eat food from the mainland either
There in rests the question we should ALL be asking ourselves.
I don't know about your neck of the woods, but Oriental restaurants here "typically" are the lowest rated by Health Departments, and get the most high profile complaints.
Standards,.......
Great point. Our previous pup started having seizures a few years ago and died a year later of reoccurring events. I couldn't prove it, but we did notice that we had given him a few bacon strip treats a few days before. Not proof, but highly suspicious that the product was made in China.
As far as waiting an entire year, back in the early '80's, Tylenol had all their product off the shelf in a manner of a day or two when the tampering scare happened. An event that changed product packaging forever. I think a year is unacceptable.
