The Slide Rock Fire, in the well known are of Oak Creek Canyon, north of Sedona, has grown to some 4000 plus acres.
Hmmm.
That fire is going to break over the rim. If it does, it could reach Flagstaff. I worked on the logging crews in that area, and there are several jobs that have had the brush piled for burning near that area. If those brush piles get lit, its all over. Especially the sale know as Railroad Springs-out on Woody Mountain Road, as well as the Tea Cup sale right next to the Oak Creek Canyon along 89A.
Oh, I get it now, is this about a forest fire or something?
There seem to be fires in that area every couple of years. When we were there in 2003 there was a fire there.
Yup.
A real shame. Some nice country.
Oak Creek Canyon is a beautiful oasis like area in Arizona. I went there as a child around 65 years ago. The movie “Blood on the Moon” was filmed there. Was also the home of Western book author whose name has completely left me. He wrote The Call of the Wild. Wonderful memories of my childhood. I hate this 02 depravation.
There aint much they can do down in that canyon. Its nearly straight up on each side. BUT, the rim is just at the head end and up there is heavy timber. The only chance they got, if that fire gets over the rim, is where we logged around Flag.
I doubt they will ever stop it.
They now are getting people ready to evac at Katrina Village-just south of Flagstaff.
It's all overI doubt they will ever stop it
Sounds pretty grim.
You see..this is why I didnt link it. I knew one of the FRiends on here would do it for me! Thanx.
I made a mistake. That was not Jack London’s home.
I cant remember how far it is from Flag to the rim before it breaks down on the switchbacks. It is not that far..only about a short drive.
Jack London 1903. Isn’t the Internet great!
Well it isnt an oasis anymore.
That fire grew from about 40 acres at about noon yesterday to over 4000 today. That is how fast it is growing.
I know, I’ve been there and I’d certainly not want to fight a fire there. The Rim has some of the roughest but most beautiful scenery in AZ.
I hope it will be contained soon. It is a lovely tree-lined drive along the creek. Not something we have much of in AZ.
you’re welcome :) I was just thru Sedona a few weeks ago and on to Flagstaff, where it was snowing (!) Lot of dry stuff south of Seligman. Hope it doesn’t jump the interstate. Stay safe !!
